Africa Twin is coming

93hp, 72lbft, 228kg wet according to a honda leak posted on Visordown.

So what are the thoughts about the DCT? For gear changes and for being able to do them from the handlebars, it sounds appealing.

But what about not having a clutch for when you need to cut power, for rut changing, root crossing, and, most importantly, when you've overcooked it and need cut power quickly!

It also seems like all the wheelies done in the video are done by the one with a conventional gearbox...

Rekluse might be an option. i saw a similar system demonstrated on a harley recently and was very impressed.

If it carries the weight like the tenere it will be fine, Hopefully like the tenere you can get it flashed to give you the power

So basically, it's in between the likes of the F800GS and the uber trailies in the 1200 league. Direct competitor to the KTM 1050 but with more off road bias ?

One things for sure a damn sight lighter and more umph than the 1150....although that's not hard to accomplish.

What does surprise though is the power to weight ratio is still not better than a twin cam 1200....goes to show how much weight is saved through having no frame...more than makes up for the shaft drive weight.

Ye but how much is it going to cost? Honda seem to be getting this a bit wrong of late, my local dealer told me if it was too expensive he wasn't interested in having stock!

Starting at £11,000 up to £12,900 with dct and panniers would be my guess .

It will sell well despite the price ( within reason) I'm sure. Looks a good bike and ticks a lot of boxes that people look for.

I have to say, I am disappointed with those stats from my own point of view.

I really liked the look of this, it is a handsome bike, and I do fancy something lighter than the WC next, but this is only 4kg lighter than the WC with the same fuel load and 25nm down on torque. KTM have proven with the 1050 that there is not great demand for a modestly powered bike in the mid sized adventure market so it has to be very superior off road to stand out, and that is not the sort of bike many of us in the UK are looking for. Though it could be a big seller in markets with more unsurfaced roads. Hopefully the figures are wrong and it is a little lighter or a little more powerful than stated.

I'm not getting hung up on numbers too much. I'll read the tests in the mags when they come out, digest the info and see how she feels when the wheels hit the showroom floor. Then it's judgement time.

Specs read like a sack of shite, so far.......................the KTM 1050 has a better tech spec than the AT

................and to think you sold a 1190R, a year early

Hope you're are not too disappointed, I would be:blast

Nope, not hitting the panic button yet. The proof will be in the riding, then I can :blast

And I think KTM have sold very few 1050's, just 38 showing as on the road so far on "How Many Left". Though with the price drop it is looking great value.

That said, the AT a lot lighter than a Super Ten, and probably going to be more reliable than the European offerings, and Honda are far from stupid. I think we have to wait and see.

Having and still owning some heavy weight very off-road capable machines I thinking...

The Honda will hide its weight well, it will be a very capable out of the box on/off road machine with a peach of a motor for the dirt yet still very good for the road

The KTM in comparison will be like a very good kit car, which will match and beat it in certain areas but the sum of the parts will not match the whole polished Honda package

Quite. :beerjug:
Obviously, I've been doing some serious thinking in the past 48 hours. I've gone from the highs of seeing the video which makes the AT look terrific, to the lows of what many will say are disappointing specs/power etc. Yes, I have some doubts, but in the main I think it'll be all ok. I don't want another European machine, period. Weirdly, I think I want a less tech laden bike that is not going to give me grief or nightmares after a few years of ownership. When I look back at all the bikes I've owned, the one that I kept for the longest and put the most miles on was my Yamaha TDM850. I hopefully see this new bike filling that role for some time, and being a Honda, expect it to only see the dealers when it needs a service.

Agreed, but it's NOT the REVOLUTION we were hoping for & the 1050 (plus a stonking Vtwin engine) is the same identical specs apart from 21/18 wheel set which could be overcome especially if you get get a 1050 for £9k ish & the @T comes in at £10-11k for the base bike

Shame, real shame

The new AT is firmly in the 1050/Tiger800/F800GS territory in terms of power & weight, it's no threat to the 1190/GS/S10/Exp sales

The other manufacturers must be smiling today, after all the Honda hype

I bet the F800GS & Adv are just as good off-road especially if you drop some Ohlins cartridges in the forks & a decent shock

Disappointed Honda .........:blast

Honda do seem quite good at doing this. Remember the whole VFR1200 build up with the futuristic concept design study thing ? When they released the actual bike, many hopeful punters, myself included, were left totally underwhelmed. And look at this weeks MCN talking about the next Fireblade. Promises of being as radical as the original, but still a long way away and being a 'slow burner' !

Fukit...... Im going to buy a Confederate Wraith. :D

The KTM 1050 wa the real disappointment for me....neither fish nor fowl. They had the opportunity to give us a relatively light weight replacement for the 990 and screwed it up IMO. No spoked wheels and wrong size plus too close to the 1190 in price. Lighter weight, more off road orientation less electronic gizmo's and the new price would have been a real adventure bike and probably sold more.

Depending on the price of the Honda, they seem to have almost got this right....apart from the weight....10-15 kgs over BUT will defo give it a test ride.

KTM should now revise the 1050 this autumn with 21/18 wheels & adjustable WP suspension at both ends - simple & cheap to do for them & then it'll easily surpass this new AT - especially as it has a stonking V Twin engine (the very heart of the original AT) much better than a parallel twin

KTM now have a game changer within their grasp

The new AT won't worry BMW or KTM or Triumph this morning ;)
