I dropped my final drive and drained the oil and everything looks pretty good, oil still golden and clean and splines in good nick with grease present. The only bad thing is the rubber gaiter/boot has a split in the side so will need a new one so any ideas on the cheapest source for a new one of those.

Also my bike is missing its rear mud guard so I want another one. Have seen some Chinese ones on Ebay that look like they will do the job if they fit.

Would something like this do:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/403748169775

The only other thing I have found is the previous owner replaced the Paralever bolt with a M10 stainless hex head bolt and nyloc nut. Is that ok or should it be a high tensile bolt?

Get a new boot from the dealer, you get a 2 year warranty that way,

and if your going that route pick up a new bolt. depending on which one it will be about £5 ish

The big boot wont be cheap though around £50

Check on realoem.com to see what other models share the same gaitor. You may then find a good used one on ebay. When I needed one for my R1200RT I replaced it with one from an R9T.

Don’t be tempted to go to Motorworks I bought a rear boot from them and had to replace it within 12 months, bought a BMW one and it has been on for over 3 years now.

My understanding is that they can order it if you have the part number whereas the bike dealership may have it on the shelf. My local BMW bike dealer said that the car dealers get deliveries twice a day but they only get one

Cheers I rang up the car dealers and they are ordering it in for Tuesday along with new orings and sealing washers. Wasn't too dear I think £43 plus VAT for the boot and about £3 for the washers etc.

Best to use some sort of grease where the boot seals against the swing arm and bevel drive. I use a grease that is on my bench but BMW and others will recommend a better one

Cheers I have some Honda Moly 60 for the splines, but for the white grease do you think this stuff will do its white lithium spray grease. I also have red rubber grease for brake calliper rubbers.

Red rubber grease will be ok on the boot but not a patch on Staburags that BMW use. A chap on this forum was Buying it in bulk and selling handy sized 40 and 80 gram tubs
Do not use Lithium grease on rubber as it attacks it.

Might have one of the gaiters in the garage. Have you got the part number Graham?
