Is it worth swapping the original? If so which one?

If you use the search facility for "akrapovich", "remus", "laser" and "bos" and you'll probably get a good idea of past views.

Some people rate them, some like the noise, some think it increases power, soem think losing the cat is more important than losing the can....

I changed mine when the original was very slightly damaged in an accident - a new Laser Titanium system cost not much more than a replacement BMW silencer.

Oh lordy. Its not an R6, is it? You won't impress anyone.

Altogether now (to the tune of "Who put the bop in the bop-de-wop-de-bop"):

Who put the crap in akrapovic
Who put the ream in remus
Who put the stain in staintune
Who put the ..."

Now now, there are plenty of good reasons to change the exhaust. It sounds nicer, adds power, reduces weight and can look nicer than stock.

For real gains though you'll want to ditch the cat as well, something I'm planning in the near future. As Robin says, do a search as it's been covered loads.

Has anyone actually determined whether aftermarket cans actually improve performance or whether its just a case of it sounds louder so it must be faster. I mean I removed the baffle from the silencer on my Tomos moped years ago and it certainly sounded faster - but went much slower.....

Seriously I've heard a lot of these cans create an enourmous flat spot in the mid range unless you are also prepared to faff around bodging an aftermarket 'chip' into the ECU (which will inevitably go wrong at some point in the future)

Best thing to do is change the down pipes to get rid of the CAT and then put the standard silencer back on. Improves pick up/mid range power and sounds nicer under excelleration. Also plod will never be able to spot the difference :thumb2

Well, I'm afraid I don't have any charts to back me up, but when I put a full staintune system on my old bike it made an incredible difference. I was able to wheelie off the throttle, something it never did before. But then that was an 1150R, and removing the cat on them is like removing a pillion :D

I think there's definitely an improvement in power with my akro end can though, but I bet there's a world of cheap alternatives that mess up the power delivery.

I just put the Remus sans baffle on my GS for noise reasons only. Sounded loverly :)

Thanks for the replies all. I've changed the exhausts on nearly all my bikes for various reasons, the last was my VFR Vtec purely because the stock one I felt was far to quite and Staintunes which I fitted in place of them where "spot on". I never change things to impress anyone........ On thats right I do! Well done Grizzly :)

I've got a copy of a test undertaken by Motorarrad magazine (German) from Jan 05. This gave the following dyno results:
Standard Exhaust 92ps
Remus Revolution 94.3ps
Sebring 97.6ps
Akrapovic 92.5ps
Bos 98.2ps - :) also got the recommended award.:thumb2

I bought a Bos and have to say I'm well pleased - sounds great, engine feels more willing and you do notice the extra power. :)

my bike has standard system on and it sounds, I think very good, it will also wheelie like a good'un,but you don't want to be doing to many'a them, but as for loud/loudish zorsts,if like me you do some back road riding in remote areas I don't think it's a very good idea to make a lot'a noise in these out of the way places that are normaly quite quiet.

I've heard many people asking about 'power gains' Has anybody looked at how much torque these aftermarket systems produce. After all, torque is is real worls usable power, not a number at the top of the rev range.

PS It was more polite than Who put the twot in Wotton? ;) :beerjug:

I prefer "who put the red in Wotton undeR EDge"

Anyways I can see the benefit in ditching the cat - plus it must be worth a few bob in scrap metal. The end can isn't going to make much difference on its own if its downstream of a cat. And a free-flowing air filter is cheaper than any end can. But if you insist a replacement end can is the thing you must have then who am I to stop you spending your money?

Tunneruk - I agree
People bang on about 'peformance' exhausts giving more power but what I'm wondering is what they do for torque and midrange. Its all very well that german mag saying the Bos exhaust gave an extra 6ps or whatever but does this leave a corresponding hole in the mid range or bottom end. I'm not convinced. The bikes ECU and fuel injection are optimised for the standard can and cat. If you change them then you are looking at a compromise. If it gives more power at the top end then Its going to screw the fueling up somewhere else. I personally don't give a toss about top end power - standard is more than enough for me. Whats more imortant is not upsetting the neighbours with a childish loud exhaust and also not upsetting the polis who may be more inclined to issue a stern talking too than a ticket if you are using a nice quiet standard pipe. I also want to be able to trickle along at minimal throttle when I go off road without fear of the thing stalling. Not too mention saving loadsa money by not buying all this junk!
