air filter - standard or peformance filter better?

An engineer where I work has apparently done air filter testing in the past, and maintains that K&N filters have very poor filtration properties, so much so that 'you might as well put a bit of mesh over the intake to catch stones'. Not suitable for a daily driver.

I reckon that the best thing to do is replace the standard filter more often than specified to maintain preformance.

This is a completely unsubstantiated guess but i think the restriction might actually be in that intake trumpet tube thing.

As for the second reply mentioning dyno runs and Remus pipes i did a dyno run not long ago.I posted a ramble about the spec of the bike that you may or may not find interesting. search for 'R1100GS 86 bhp dyno run' if you are interested.

read through the thread - have you mentioned you may get more power using an after market filter ?.

no i didnt i said it gave me 'holey' power' as in 'awful' and 'full of holes'

:augie

I think we are in double misunderstanding territory here. I think Steptoe meant that as you hadn't mentioned getting more power then he wasn't directing any comment at you.

John Kosinski once said "If you ain't American you ain't shit" which to him sounded great but to us was a double negative that implied he was shit 'cos he was American... which seemed a little rough for self critisism:D

PS Even with the TB's cleaned and a serious set up my bike still kangraoo's at very small throttle openings. I am thinking of blocking the inlets with wet rags for better running... :augieSkippy, Skippy, Skippy the GS kangaroo...:augie

Glad someone understood :D

FFS all i asked was people's thoughts and you end up getting all this tiring sh1te.

:

I gave my experiences with airfilters, as you asked.

Then you asked if what i posted was directed at you ??? which it obviously wasn't ( as someone else pointed out) - and i replied so you understood.

Yes it is tiring shite. Which is the norm when asking peoples thoughts about mundane things.

So what filter are you going to use. :D

so then will i get better performance with no filter?
:D

or should i lose 5 stone and buy a fireblade..........

dont respond to what you consider mundane questions then

Wot he said :clap I seem to remember reading some were that you can get a good boost in power by using the snorkel from an 1150R

This may sound a little radical but.,
here in south africa almost all of the guys who do intensive off road work on there bikes fit a free flowing filter,k&n or the other one that excapes me now, wait i think its called B something....

Not just because we clean them after every ride but in case we dump the bikes in water, the paper one s fall to bits in the wet, and can be sucked into the intake very easily, [they weaken after they dry out] the k&n can be shaken and refitted straight away.
and yes i have dumped all my bikes in deep water and tested this.
i personally always use a high flow\ performance filter but i always fit an aftermarket pipe as well.
I have felt increased performance, but mainly on my dakar and x challenge, on my 1100 gs i did the pipe as well.
of course the dakar must have that ridiculous intake pipe cut just before the filter and the x challenge has to have the filter restrictor removed so it can breath.
to sum up,if you are going off road a lot change it.

another thought "stripes"
with the right colour stripes for the bike, this has been known to increase performance.

personally I don't use stripes as I have a black 1150gs, and is commonly known to be the fastest of them all :bow

Are you talking about putting stripes on your air filter?

Vertical or horizontal stripes?

How would this increase performance?
:D

Biggest difference will be loose a stone in weight make it go better. alternative air filters are as about as effective as a go faster stripe along the tank.
