So I was replacing the fuel hose on my R80G/S. When i was taking out the airbox I thing the bolt that run down through the center of the airbox into the transmission was covered in something that appeared and felt to be like silicon. Is this normal? Should I silicon it before re-installing? Any ideas?

Unless there has been some sort of gearbox casing damage, that bolt hole (IIRC) is blind (ie not through into the gearbox guts) so it shouldn't need anything.

You could just probe the hole (fnar fnar) with a suitable er... probe, to check it bottoms out maybe?

The Airbox bolt has an 8mm thread in the gearbox that goes through the casing. I shouldn't leak as its well above the oil level and the battery earth/speedo cable retainer/breather bolt should keep the internal pressure at atmospheric.

I shouldn't be necessary to seal that bolt thread - Unless, of course, you expect to invert the bike out in the boondocks :D.

Bob.

Maybe they had emulsified gearbox oil and assumed it came in from the airbox. it isn't a blind hole it simply threads into the gearbox so its important not to have too long a bolt.

You can see in this top down shot that the hole goes straight through

inside another box shows the hole from the inside
