Airhead 80-100 G/S Adventure Build

Was hoping for startup this weekend, but a combination of my son’s birthday celebrations and big Bertha hogging the ramp

While I fit the cruise control means it’s unlikely. Beginning to run out of jobs now …

Cheers Tim - I’ve now got a date with the Alps so will pass this year.

Right back to the build. It’s great having a lad who can drive now - he ran up to Mick’s place to pick up the painted bits in the week.

So Now it’s time to start fitting the shiny parts.

As ever we’re into the small jobs that take a load of time.

Just getting the wiring right (all crimps, Cookie ) and all the faff is a good few hours work. But another step on.

Rear brake switch, front indicators, Tabnav, tachometer, voltmeter and instrument lights wiring tomorrow, then the fairing can go on.

Looking bloody great there Nin

Keep us all updated please…..

Cheers Bubb

A few more steps today - fitted power supply for the Tabnav/electronic road book, and the rear brake switch.

Proper old school wiring!

It’s time to make it official.

Yep that’s the right plate, thanks Mike

There we go.

Got everything lined up for start-up, test fuel tank connected, hoses all firmly attached, float levels adjusted, good to go.

But no spark, feck.

I’m getting a spark cycling between ign on and off, also with the kill switch on and off. So it seems my mahoosively expensive electronic sender unit might be on the fritz.

WIll take the dog for a walk then start testing.

Bollox.

Cheers though it doesn’t feel like it today!

All the tests suggest the ign control unit isn’t receiving a signal from the sensor unit, and the sensor unit isn’t putting out a timing signal.

What is it wit my builds and ignition I systems?!. (See my Guzzi build three)

Hey ho, let’s get a Wedgetail then, at least they have multiple redundancy built in and can be repaired not like this sealed Bosch BMW piece of crap.

Feck, bollox, 4rse.

Ignition units

Sachse units seem well thought of. Come with selectable maps (unlike the Wedgetail?) which may be a consideration?

Thanks, yes I looked at them. 3-4 weeks delivery, and they look quite a bit more fragile than the Aussie kit.

Don’t think I’d use the multiple maps facility to be honest, but maybe in a future configuration.

I'd be interested how you get on with the Wedgetail.

My sparky thingy has a flat spot at around 2.5k revs. I tried a prototype from Motorworks that Mike suggested I tried out and, until I blew it up and had to push my bike to Mike's, it was much stronger and smoother. There was a noticeable improvement.

So in my view, getting a good system is well worth the money.

Looking at how the Wedgetail system has been developed, it seems like the Aussie guy had got so fed up with mediocre stuff that he designed a really resilient solution. It's just a pity it's so expensive, but, it's only money. :blast

Agreed. It looks robust, has built in redundancy a la aviation units, and components can be replaced.

The ignition map has had good feedback on ADV Rider, so let’s see.

I’ll keep you posted!

Wedgetail

I do like the look of the Wedgetail unit, have read quite about it and 'spoken' via email with the makers. Considering one for my old r75 - programmable maps not required! I'm in no rush - and maybe Motobins will run a sale again in the Autumn...

I've had a pin come adrift on the multi-pin connector before (if you have one to the standard Ignition control unit) - worth checking under the rubber boot?
