airhead history could be for sale

Knowing admittedly sod all about airheads,it does seem to me that their value does seem somewhat inflated within these forum walls.

While Camille may have some history-though why some Frog dwarf trashing a bike in the sand would add value-it's only worth what someone will pay.

And there are always some people on here that say they would pay top whack but then never put there money where their mouth is.

:comfort

I have bought and sold quite a few Airheads and I am usually up with market values.

From my experience, this Forum always undervalues ALL Airheads.

Generally, if a quick sale is wanted, then you will be lucky if you get the true value for any Bike.

There will be few potential buyers for this Bike at the valuation indicated by the owner. The market is small and he may have to wait until the right buyer comes along.

That said, I have no idea what this Bike is worth from the information given and I would suggest that, if the Bike is what it is said to be, all the available (substantiated) history and provenance needs to be given before any value can be ascertained.

As an offroad and road package the XChallenge beats that airhead hands down - better suspension, lighter, same power and it's faster because it's more of a rounded package.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and whilst it's a pretty bike, the XC is a better bike to ride fast offroad because it's been designed to do that

The only Boxer that I would now purchase for offroad would be a HP2 - because 105 HP is bonkers:D:thumb

I'm not a 100% in agreement with that view and having the benefit of owning an XC and the Airhead I'd agree for ultimate speed the XC is faster but if you asked me now what bike I'd use on a long distance rally I'd say the Airhead.

The Airhead offers a level of stability that enables you to ride at 80% for longer - The video below show's where the Airhead is really good, it smooths out the trail.

And it sounds good :-)

Of course if the trail goes bad and every thing goes tit's up - I'd be wishing I had the XC

The thing I don't understand about this bike is, if it is the genuine bike that BMW won the Paris Dakar rally with and it is so famous - why did it come up for sale on Ebay at the price it did? I would have thought it would have been sat in the factory museum in Germany

What parts of this bike are the same as the one in the video clip and as Bill said were is the substantiated history?

The final words of the video are:

'The Paris Dakar Legend will always be linked to this motorcycle'

Q: is that bike 'this motorcycle' ?

If yes I'd say they'd be many people who would love to own it and be able to pay top dollar, you'd just need to make them aware of it.

There must be a few UK Mottard dealers who would be intrested for the publicity it would bring.

If it's not 'this motorcycle' then how good a replica is it?

Just a few gems of info.
Firstly bike is 1984 and should have the Penthouse tank and front end.
It did but previous owner modified Camille into '85 bike with Marlborough tank:nenau
Secondly. Frame numbers tally with HPN.
Thirdly, you'll have to read the fecking TOME [around 20 kgs ] of paperwork authenticating her.................
Thats all I'm saying, apart from I'd love to own her :bow:bow
BUT and it's a big BUT.... I'd never be able to get on or off her :tears:tears:tears

Regarding the "EBAY" sale, No one could believe it, on here for instance 99% of posters on the actual thread about her, thought "can't be true or correct"
O ye of little faith :augie:augie

Agreed Wreford.........................but for me the XC is better.................for others maybe not

Not least BMW I would have thought as they must be keen to get it back.

And here's the first problem ...

Firstly bike is 1984 and should have the Penthouse tank and front end.
It did but previous owner modified Camille into '85 bike with Marlborough tank.

As far as I can tell at a quick glance - Different tank, fairing, headlights, exhaust .....

Hopefully things work out and you don't need to sell it but with the Exchange rate as it is you may find a buyer from Europw willing to pay more than in the UK. I know a few people of late who have sold HP2E's and the buyers came from Germany were the going rate is around 11500€

This little cutie is on Mobile.de for just shy of 8000€ but nothing like the heritage of your bike.Oh and buy the way I just love this thjing - looks a hoot

Syco, mate, you're mad...

When times get tough this is precisely what companies want and do, they are happy to see people pissed off enough to chuck their jobs in because it means they save money on the salary bill and it's cheaper than doing the right thing (compromising you out or paying redundancy)

Ditching your job is one thing, but having to loose your fav toys to do it... what's the point? they just win doubly then.

Trippy, in the vid it also said that the victory was repeated in 1985.......a quick search turns up this for '85 which may answer your question :blast

Look familiar?

Look familiar?

Looks similar apart from different forks, brakes, exhausts, headlights, rear subframe, handguards, carbs (?), engine bars etc etc.

So this bike has the same frame number as the bike that won the PD in 84 but it has been made into a replica of the bike that one in 85, is that right?

Looks more like a 90's #34 Lucky Strike RGV250 copy of Schwantz's works RG500 GP bike to me

Putting the pics up of THE actual 1984 and 1985 Dakar bikes has done wonders

Cheers Bill:thumb

airhead history

Jeesh:eek: No wonder I'm struggling buying an R100GS, that guy Spout's got them all:blast

Actually, just read his profile, maybe he's sold them:augie

not quite

the forks are zocci M1s (even though they have kyarba stickers, the rear disc mount has been machined off and new ones mounted on front, two front hubs have been machined to make a twin disc hub on the front. the rear subframe is the same as the 84 bike pictured but had new bits added to hold the rear bags and rack. the guy did tonnes of stuff to it in the 20years he had it, he just wanted the 85 bike and was willing to butcher the original:nenau. i guess back in 1990 bmw gs's wern't quite as special as they are now. it spent 3 years in a dealers window before he bought it. heres a pic a year after and he'd already started to mod her.

Given the changes made to the original 84 bike and those changes not even truely replicating the 85 bike, I wouldn't have thought that it could really be priced as a piece of history. As it stands I would have thought it was worth, well whatever the highest bidder on ebay is prepared to pay and I would guess that would be somewhere around what Johnnyboxer said.

The cruix of the matter is that it is a superb looking and unique gs and if no one has already pm'd sycomoto to buy it already, then maybe a little stint on Eblag would be the order of the day.
I personally think it outshines many of the blinged ones and the basics as it is genuinely different:thumb2 and this one is worth over the £5,000 mark, many arn't !!!
