Dear all,

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding some basic motorcycle (airheads ideally...) maintenance courses around the South? I've a big trip planned starting in October and am keen to get as familiar as possible with the bike before then!

I have the Clymer and original BMW manuals and am happy to give most things a go...

Many thanks in advance,

Daniel

maintanance course

Merton college in south london do a m/cycle maintanance course.....Not sure of the start dates, but it will be on Google.

Where's the trip to?

Bubb

Thanks Bubb, that's great. And not far from me either.

Will be heading from Argentina to Alaska (two up...) for the best part of a year...

Respect for that trip.

What bike will you be using?

Thanks Dr Nosh. Will be on my '83 R80G/S, for a variety of (mainly nostalgic) reasons. I figured if anything does go wrong with the bike, which I'm sure it will, it would be more likely repairable roadside than a R1200GS! Provided I get my act together...

Had a look at the Merton college course - two courses a year; one started in January and the next not until September of this year which unfortunately would be too late. Looks like there's a similar one in Hammersmith and Fulham, though: http://www.hfals.co.uk/course-information-680 starting in April.

They wont tell you anything that's relevant to an Airhead G/s.

Have a word with Mikey Boy. Sort out a price with him for the use of his workshop for the day. Then come up country and we'll let you pull one apart for the day and take you through it. There's a nice B&B in the village next to his workshop to make it easy :beerjug:

+1 for robs suggestion, will be much more the ticket . Take a smart phone to take snaps or recordings if he doesn't mind!

Another vote for Mikeyboy, he looks after my 81 g/s for me as I'm mechanically illiterate.

I was wondering what constituted a "big trip" but just spotted it on your other posts. Bobs idea is spot on, if you have the chance to be taken through the bike it'll give you great peace of mind on the road. You'll also probably have a good eye cast over your steed and any warning signs may be spotted before you hit the road.

Apologies for the late response.

Thanks Rob, that's a great suggestion and the sort of advice I was looking for. It'll be a good excuse to get out of the big smoke for a weekend...
