Glad you got sorted, I had a virtually identical one also in Blue but with lower bars and an "s" fairing. I am actually trying to get it back but the owner is playing hard ball on value!
I subscribe to the "Grand for a complete one, but scruffy" and £1500 for a "smart" one.

May post a photo if I can wrestle it off him.

Right, the relay which was disintegrating was NOT the starter relay as I thought (although I did change that whilst I was at it) but seems to be a buzzer relay. I never knew the bike had a buzzer. It's marked BMW 1 243 560.3 and dated 11/78 with terminals 30, 86, 87a and 85. Could someone confirm what I have (and where the buzzer would be? In the headlamp shell?)

Ah, solved it, my December 1977 R100/7. I was referring to the 1977 wiring diagram shown in Haynes, but the 1978 wiring diagram DOES show a buzzer relay in the wiring loom.

(Later) And Motorworks sell them at £29 (jeez!)
