We picked up a 2011 GSA yesterday and we're rather pleased with it. I was surprised to see it doesn't have an alarm as I didn't realise it was an option.

I understand from a search of the forums that the BMW alarm can be retrofitted and involves replacement of the TPS. Is there any advantage in fitting the BMW alarm over a Meta alarm like I have fitted to other bikes? I'm assuming, of course, that a Meta alarm can be fitted and the CanBus system doesn't preclude that.

If, by TPS you mean the tyre pressure sensors, I have both fitted to my 08 GSA but it is the OEM alarm not a Meta.
 
When I saw TPS in the other thread I assumed it was referring to the Throttle Position Sensor (although I'm not quite sure why it is related to the alarm).

So four blokes turn up in a beat up old white van, pick the bike up and throw it in the back. The alarm's going off, but nobody takes a blind bit of notice! :blast

What's the good of the alarm now? :nenau

The bike gets dismantled and the parts sold on eBay, what's the good of the alarm NOW? :mad:

I have a Meta alarm on my K1100RS. With that one you need to use the fob to turn the alarm off but on the OEM one on my GSA the ignition key will do that so if the battery in the fob dies you an still start the bike. No real biggy though as I carry a spare battery under the seat just in case.
 
Unlike Bluesweeper I think an alarm will give you a chance against a thief. As a biker I would certainly pay attention to "any" person moving a bike while the alarm was sounding.

Good afternoon the wellers..!

Something a bit different maybe..

I have a K1200s with factory fitted BMW alarm, very sensitive, a pain in the ass if u want to work on the bike or even bump into it & the keys are not to hand..

I have recently bought a 2011 GSA & didn't want the BMW alarm... instead I fitted a Road Angel 'Bike Trac'
There are 2 options to wiring it up, 1 is ignition controlled & arms & disarms with the ignition key, so fit & forget..
2nd is direct to battery, u set via text & it sets a geo fence around your parking area, so it can be worked on or moved slightly in the garage..
You get alerts if it's disconnected or moves out of the predefined area, I've been testing various different scenarious & got a few warning messages etc.
I can also move it from bike to bike or car if leaving anywhere iffy.
U can also see where bike is located via the web mapping..
Bad side it costs a subscription but considering the data it must send or receive I can live with that.. (I think) personally I hate subscriptions but in this case I think it's worth it..
I'm no expert but it's working for me.. also so easy to fit...

Sounds like the BMW alarm is self-arming like the Datatool which drove me up the wall before I had it replaced. I had a read of the Bike-Trac web site but in the end decided to go for a Meta which is being fitted in the morning.

The BMW alarm isn't self-arming. You can set it to self-arm though, along with assorted other settings (service etc).

May be too late if you are already off down the META route. If so, hey-ho :beerjug:

PS Once fitted, remember to park close by Luke (Beam me up) Scott at all times.... he'll keep an ear out for it.... though I doubt if your insurer will regard Luke's service as Thatcham Approved.

Thanks. That prompted a quick U-turn. I cancelled the Meta appointment and booked it into Coopers in Tunbridge Wells for Wednesday afternoon to have a BMW alarm fitted on the grounds the cost was comparable and the BMW alarm is better integrated.

(If someone was about to post telling me the the Meta decision was a good one, please don't!)

I got the BMW alarm fited to mine when I bought it second hand. To be honest I wish I hadn't bothered. It functions fine and is nicely integrated with the rest of the bike but the siren/beep is a bit pathetic and far too quiet.

Do u know I never even thought to investigate the arm settings, at the moment it arms when the ignition is turned off, so when cleaning etc it is a pain in t ass..

Press the ( I think ) right button on the remote and it will put the alarm into valet mode. You can then clean your bike without the alarm going off. Same if your on a ferry with all the shoogling.

Thanks for that, it's a bike I don't use too much & prob clean it more than ride it, I'll try to find the booklet & check out the remote buttons. :beerjug:

On another note, when it goes off it's VERY loud & piercing..

In the middle of a long term car park, maybe alarm sirens are ignored...heck, maybe out on the street outside your house, car alarms are ignored, but I guarantee you, if my alarm was still fitted and you had set it off, you wouldn't be around to scoff at the way some alarms are ignored :thumb

Biggest problem with car and bike alarms has always been the standard to which they are fitted.....if 95% of alarms going off are down to poorly set sensitivity or false triggering, you cant blame 95% of people for ignoring them going off :rob
 
Meta alarm

hi guys new to this site please be gentle . Was wondering if anyone knows of a good electrician to remove the alarm I have fitted as I can't get the immobilizer off . Also ware about a on the bike is it fitted I have a2005 gs adventure .
