I know this has been discussed before and there appears to be those that deride anything to do with eBay or AliExpress items, sticking staunchly to the Machine Art, Wunderlich, Touratech etc etc branded items from ‘reputable’ sellers. Then there are those that are more open minded about it.
Anyway, on my previous bike that I’ve just part exchanged I spent a fortune over the years on the above branded name products, front mudguard extension, rear Mudsling, headlight guard, headlight peak, instrument surround, rear mudguard extension, side stand foot, the list goes on.
Having just spent a lot of dosh on moving to a year old R1250GS I thought bloody hell I’ve got all that to do again.
Then I thought I’d take a punt on AliExpress, spending around £70 on the usual items and they all arrived end of last week and today. I am very impressed with what I’ve got and they are mostly fitted now. The quality and fit is way above what I was expecting and having had all the big name items on my previous bike I’m qualified to judge.
The front mudguard extension is exactly the same as the Machine Art one, including stainless screws, perfect fit, looks and feels identical.
The rear mud sling is 95% identical to the Machine Art one and fits exactly the same, just as good quality nylon.
The side stand foot is the same quality as my previous one, BUT, did need very slightly filing to fit perfectly.
The frame hole rubbers, I was expecting cheap hard plastic and they are flexible, perfect fit rubber.
The headlight guard is great, perfectly clear thick Perspex screen with a powder coated frame, though I’m going to fit rubber washers which didn’t come with it.
The radiator guards are perfectly finished, powder coated, possible aluminium and fit well.
Overall I’m very impressed for what I’ve spent and will be ordering some other items.
The only downside is waiting two to four weeks for delivery.
No doubt there will be many negative comments about ‘Chinese rubbish’ but remember, when something says ‘made in’ it only has to be finally assembled or finished off in that country to be able to claim ‘made in Germany’ etc.

Have to say that I have no problem with the aliexpress hugger thing that has been on my bike for over a year now.
Many companies seem to buy their products there, slap a name on them and sell then on for a huge profit, they manage to fleece idiots who need a name rather then the function of the product.

It boils down to snobbery, surely if it costs six times as much and says Touratech on it it must be better? :blast

I bought a few items for my GSA from cheaper sources, one in particular was a Lone Rider copy of their orange fold down headlight guard. I can't recall exactly how much it was but I suspect it was about the £50 mark. Manufactured in China, shipped to the UK, arrived un-damaged, fit exactly as it should, worked exactly as it should. I need say no more. :thumb

People will no doubt comment that we should support UK businesses, well I say to those UK businesses, don't try and rip me off and I'll gladly purchase items from you.

My argument for buy British, is unless it say's made in Britain clearly on it, how do you know where stuff is coming from? There's plenty of 'Designed in Britain' but then they don't always acknowledge where it was made..

I did however watch a youtube clip of a guy dismantling a big Ryobi battery and it's far cheaper knock off version and even I could tell the two parts were very different in quality!

I should add that I’ve also bought some engine bars but chose Touratech from a UK seller.
Out of the Touratech stuff I had on my previous bike, the stainless oil cooler guard started to show rust, the paint peeled off the rear number plate/mudguard extension and the headlight protector Perspex went a bit opaque.

What people forget is without the expensive stuff, these cheaper versions which are reverse engineered/copied wouldn't exist......

Whilst the price may be better the build quality, quality of materials & order/returns/warranty support are (to me) important.

Aliexpress is very good but I've had awful experiences with Banggood

Interesting view but my recent experience is that the Touratech engine bars from a well known UK seller arrived with the nuts and bolts bag open and all over the box, three washers missing. So far after just over a week there has been no response to my enquiry about this and I’ve bought some myself.
Everything that’s arrived from AliExpress has been extremely well packed and in perfect as described condition, equal in quality to the branded stuff I had previously.
I made an enquiry to the seller of an LED headlight on AliExpress and got an immediate response with full assurance that if I was not completely satisfied it could be returned free of charge, to a UK warehouse, and a full refund given.
AliExpress hold all payments from the sellers until the buyer receives the product and indicates they are satisfied.
Prior to buying these items I was very sceptical about buying anything from there.

This.

Who'll come up with the new ideas when innovators such as Machine Art Moto disappear and the looky likey manufacturers have nothing to copy?

For me, if its structural or safety i buy good stuff. If its cosmetic i buy cheapest i can find.
I have plenty of alliexpress bits that are good quality (to look at).

I have had 4 items for my 1200r delivered from Aliexpress today, the handguards, tank pad and mudsling copy are of similar quality to the named ones I had fitted to my GS and all fit well but the radiator cover is far too small and the mounting seem to be reversed as there is no hole for it to line up with, it was only a tenner and I have already sent pics of it and asked for a refund, so reasonably happy it will be sorted.
Still a couple of bits to come but those that have arrived all came really well packaged and undamaged.

I know people have issues with the copies and reverse engineering without development costs etc but 4-5 times the price for a piece of moulded plastic with a “name” on it is a bit too much, I would be wary of buying anything structural maybe but everything is more than likely made in the same factory as the branded stuff anyway.

I wouldn't judge one supplier about 1 order where there are issues. Some things do slip through the net, and i hope you/they get it resolved in a timely manner. I am assuming you bought Touratech bars because you know they'll work, rather than aftermarket ones from an unknown brand.

It's good to hear AliExpress can be good to deal with. But i avoid buying anything from overseas (the East), even on eBay.

Not really; when you consider the amount of people & resource to research & design a product. Then build multiple prototypes & test them. Then it comes to creating the production tooling, QC, packing, shipping etc. If all you need to do is scan a product and get a mould created you cut out 75% of the expense to get to that point.

This video from Lone Rider about designing a tank bag (not a difficult bit of kit) gives a good idea at this time stamp (from 1.37 onwards) from initial idea through to production.

Many years ago, people would often shy away from products which were labelled Made in China. However China is a world leader in innovative technology and electrical products. When I was much younger people would be embarrassed to admit they owned a Skoda and then along came the Skoda Octavia VRS…….

Wouldn't disagree.

However, how many of the items are designed in China, rather than copied - with little consideration to what the original designers needed to factor in to the costs?

When we moved production of our industrial vertical screw compressors from Hartford, Connecticut to China the initial units had awful failure rates. Within 18 months, the Chinese made compressors we’re head and shoulders above the American made items. The Chinese are not the fools many would have us believe.

Imagine how the guy who designed the first round shape felt, or the guy that came up with the plastic pool chair felt...get over it. It's a product that does the exact same job, albeit manufactured cheaper..If it ws so expensive to produce, they'd have patented something...law of the the land

Good theory if you have zero moral compass..... hahahahaha "they'd have patented something"....yeah, that means a lot on Aliexpress.....please.
