Looking to join the world of adeventure touring with a GS.

Now which one?

Love the look and presence of the 1150GSA over the GS, tank range, extra height (I'm 6'3)

I also preferred LWR to LWD but thats besides the point...

The budget is going to be around £5K.

So decision made right?

Well I keep seeing 1200GSA's going for not much more than that so I need help deciding.

Will be used for commuting and for full on 2 up touring including our honeymoon next year.

All advise appreciated.

Thanks

£5k will get you a good 1150 and lesser 1200, for me it would have to be an 1150.

The trick is finding a good lowish mileage bike.

Yeah I have seen a few nice ones around, will just be a case of working out final budget when my 9r sells and finding the best for the money!

I,ve had 1150gs and 1200adv just ordered 1200 adv wc ,all excellent bikes 1150 is quite heavy fully loaded, as is 1200, 1150 has cult status but for your budget you should get a decent 1200 Gs with panniers and extras, hope this helps you decide

It would seem you are more suited to the 1200, mentioning the LWD is banned by the 1150 stalwarts :D

And as if by magic....http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?382204-BMW-1150-GSA

That is a lot of bike for that money. As a died in the wool high mileage 1200 owner, I would always recommend one over an 1150 for lots of reasons but for your budget, this is a belting buy and a few more quid on some second hand bits and bobs like panniers and you will have a really good bike that will do just about anything you want.

1150gsa is a great 2up touring bike if you like to bimble along, don't get me wrong it can lift it's skirts when it wants to but 2up and fully loaded overtakes need to be carefully planned.

If I where looking with your budget, I'd go for a very nice 1150gsa and to be fair your budget should buy you the best.

If you do get an 1150gsa with the all in one seat, get one of the seat extenders that go on the back of the pillion seat, your future better half will thank you.

Good luck with the search, and once you've made your mind up put an ad in the wanted section on here,it can often lead to folks who are only thinking about it offering their bike for sale.

I have seen this in the ads section, it does indeed look to be the cleanest example I have seen! The only thing is, I think I'd much prefer an adventure due to my size and the look and presence of the GSA's.

With regards to the seat extender I will see how we get on... fortunately the better half is only 5'2 and 6 odd stone so only has a small footprint on the seat :thumb

What is this 'adventure touring' lark?
Is it just riding a bike?

No off road riding? You can't have an adventure if you're not riding off piste :D

Oh, sorry, though this was the ABR forum.... :blast

But I can have one if I want the taller one with the longer tank range? :-P I might like to use the gs to do some light green laning but nothing major

That's good as the 1150 GSA rear seat is "tiny"........Buy a 1200 GSA... i converted from an 1150 and have never looked back.... very happy with it.... 2006 18,000 miles bought last december for a few hundred quid over your budget.

Here's me having an "Adventure" holiday two weeks back....

Well, I took the plunge, saw a local 1150GSA for sale by another Tosser and was too good a deal to miss. Picked it up saturday evening and like most people say 'boy that was a strange ride'.

Done around 100 miles so far and beginning to love it already!

I'll get some picks up when I get a chance!
