I am searching for a replacement for my 3 yo Caberg Justissimo. Nice concept, especially the flip down sun visor but I just can't put up with the water ingress through the chin vent, seals and top vent. Travelling at speed in the wet is a nigtmare as you soon have Niagra falls down the inside from the top and something resembling a geyser from the bottom. It all meets in the middle in a focussed and scientifically researched spot precisely in your preferred line of sight.

So I want a helmet that I can wear in torrential rain at 80mph on the motorway (obviously this is a true 70mph, it's just that he GS speedo is so optimistic, as I'd never speed on the public highway) that will only have water on the outside of the visor and which will not mist up at all, ever, period. Or at leat the next best thing.

Who is wearing what and what do you consider to be the strong/weak points?

I will consider flip front or full face. I'm not overworried about weight or fitting speakers as I use Ultimate ear speaker plugs. (brilliant by the way!)

IMO all helmets will let in water eventually. It's just When, Where and How Much.

I use a Schuberth Concept. Like the Justissimo it is flip front and has an internal sunvisor. Water ingress depends on the bike and the airflow over the helmet. With the visor full closed it will eventually take in some water through the front chin grille thingy.

Another really useful feature is that the visor can be flicked forward a couple of mm on either side. This is great for really cold days as it lets in a little bit of air when the visor is fully down and that clears any misting.

However - on cold days when it's chucking it down and you've got to keep the visor sealed then it's Mistings'R'Us. The person who devises a totally fog-free visor will be very rich.

Yer pays yer money .....

Schuberth S1 + cold + rain =

I've just returned my Schuberth C2 after the visor leaked in heavy rain. It had already been returned once for the same thing but the fix didn't work and so I swapped it for a Shoei XR-1000. The downside is that I'm back to wearing sunglasses again but it doesn't leak and it has a pinlock insert that means it doesn't mist up either :thumb

Arai Signet GT - not draughty and don't let water in - currently £200 from HG - now on my second with the first one lasting 50,000 miles

Have caberg justissimo, had some probs with water ingress early on, cured by first a coating of rain-x both sides, second having a look at visor fit, fiddled around with this for a while, then seemed to find the visor fitted/sealed more tightly against helmet, espcially at the top edge of visor!
Its a good helmet for me as being flip front I can get at the closure more readily (slightly disabled in finger department) and I love the built in sun visor...although i wish it was a bit quieter! am thinking about a schuberth c2 next...only for a bit more "chin" room!

Got my BMW EVO4 Fliplid free with the bike two years ago. Done 36,000 miles with it - mostly motorway and has been good until ........it let in a small amount of water for the first time last week but I was in a torrential downpour for about 1/2 hour at 80mph. As far as I am concerned when it comes to buying another I will probably opt for an EVO anyway. BMW now do an EVO5 which I understand is a Schuberth - isn't it?

Agreed, although as an all weather 356 days a year biker, and after coasting through as many helmets in as many years, my present XR1000 pinlock seems to do the trick, up to a point of course :D ;)

I agree. My XR1000 hasn't let a drop of rain in through the past week's gales and the pinlock prevents any fogging whatsoever. :thumb

My Shoei X-11 was back at the dealer last week for the ninth time as it leaks due to an imperfect radius where the visor seal fits.
The Shoei agents have declined to replace it. :spitfire

Lazer revolution... not really had it on in heavy rain, feels kinda heavy, has a totally fog free double glazed visor and a full pull down sunvisor.

MIne came with it's very own rubber face mask... but you have to buy it as an optional extra thesedays...

So Shoei is looking good at this point. Keep it coming folks all contributions welcome.

Re the pinlock system though, I have noticed that all of the Shoei helmets have labels saying "for daytime use only". What happens after dark? Is there a glare or double image problem?

Nah. They say "If tinted, for daytime use only". No probs after dark. For sunny days, you can either get a tinted pinlock insert or a full tinted visor with pinlock.

I've worn Shoei, Arai, AGV & Shark and the XR1000 is the best yet.

Packer,

On Saturday you said that you had ordered a new helmet.

What is it ?

Curious as I have the same 'Caberg' problems.

Voyager.

Schuberth concept works fine in all weathers, tho misting can be a problem if I don't regularly treat the visor with anti-misting solution. The wife's C2 much the same as are the System 4's I have for the kids.

The thing about misting is that it's all dependant on the type of journey. I do a fair bit of inner city work on my daily commute and it's while stuck in very slow traffic or at lights that misting becomes an issue. Factor in cold wet conditions and this becomes a real anti-mist test. I've heard loads of folk say that their helmet/visor is mist free, but it turns out this is on the perfect day riding at speed with little or no stops :)

XR 1000 fantastic lid but no good if you intend putting speakers in (Autocom) just not enough room, my C2 is next to useless on cold wet rides ie this time of year!! I think I,ll go for an Arai next time as my old Walker rep was great but not very quite

I have taken out a second mortgage and bought a BMW System 5 plus a double glazed visor (BMW doublespeak for pin-lock). You can't buy them as a unit. So far it's proven excellent but should be at over £327. You can also get bits to convert it into a jet helmet if you wish and it can all be done (including removing chin guard) without tools.

40 miles last night from Largs over the moors back to Glasgow, torrential rain, made very very excellent progress over the moor and on a short stretch of dual carriageway, open chin vent, no water ingress and no misting in town at traffic lights despite sitting with the visor closed. SO FAR I'M SERIOUSLY IMPRESSED. I dont want to shout too soon though. Also loads of space around ears (they have left space for speakers) so no pressure on ear plugs.

I never did try the double glazed visor for my Sys 5 as I came to the conclusion that it just had too many other 'design faults'. I'll keep it as a summer helmet as imho the XR 1000 blows it out the water in just about every department.
