Alloy wheel bearings

I recently bought a pair of GS alloy wheels to fit to my GSA while I have the GSA hubs etc powder coated.

I need new wheel bearings but eBay is bereft unless I buy from USA . Ive not yet asked BMW but does anyone know a good independent supplier.

Your local bearing man should have some but they aren't a kings ransom from a dealer

Front wheel bearings were £17 from BMW dealer.

I just replaced the balancer shaft bearing in the front engine cover, £4 from these good people with next day delivery, or £28 from BMW. I would give them a try if you know the size etc

Mind out for different bearing types\speed ratings etc.. I get c3 bearings for my wheels.

The bearings are deep groove rubber sealed ball bearings 52mm OD, 25mm ID and 15mm wide. SKF standard clearance are £5.22 + Vodka And Tonic. Seals are also reasonable, but I need to measure the spindle because the old seal IDs are hard to measure accurately.

Simply Bearings say elsewhere that C3 clearance is wider than standard clearance. Its intended for high speed and/or high temperature uses and unsuitable for wheel bearings.

Hmm different then what I was told... But I never had a problem from the blade that they were put into and the old lad has them in his Blackbird, guess its the speed ...lol... lot faster bikes than the GS12.. but I must look into it again, hate to have a problem when maybe I least want one.

Bearings

If you quote the number thats etched or embosed onto the bearing or the seal then any supplier will be able to Identify the correct bearing and seal for you. You could also check specialist supplier like ERIKS industrial who have branches nationwide (I think )

Ive had a close look at the old bearings but cant see any details etched on the edge. The seals show they are Polish made.

That's the stuff. I personally prefer SKF because of the name but Im sure they are all pretty much the same.

I'm sure I saw a thread somewhere linking to a spreadsheet somebody made of compatible bearings, but unable to find it when doing a search.

ISTR they were Seiko Koyo bearings, a type which I've used plenty of on Yamaha etc without any issues, a quality Japanese brand of bearing.

They will (re should) know the correct size, type & spec of bearing & seal fitted to any given bike

As with most things these days....A lot of 'different make' bearings are made in the same factory.

That may be the case but how do we know which is a 'quality' cheap bearing & a shite cheap bearing.
Personally, I'd sooner pay 2 pounds extra & buy a quality branded item

when i changed to cast wheels recently on my gsa and fitted two new bearings i was surprised how cheap the bm ones were tbh.btw use a heat gun when refitting the new bearings they go in with much less violence and of course store them in the freezer just prior to installation

I went for a pair of SKF (never had a bad SKF bearing) from Simply Bearings at about £5.50 each plus delivery and VAT. I've not checked with BMW because its a 2 hour round trip from here to Benhams.

The hot air gun** is ready and freezer is cooling down ready to do the job.

** I might use a fan heater on full blast as it heats a bigger area and cooler areas of alloy will really suck any heat away.

fan heater as well good idea,btw did you remove any bearings to get wheels coated?
