Alps trip in late September

Thanks Simon, got your mail.

FWIW to the OP, right up until Wednesday last week we were experiencing temps of around 29-31deg up in the Susten, Grimsel and Suska passes. Absolutely brilliant and uncharacteristic according to the locals.

I was there last week too... twice... Good, innit?

Grimsel without fog I hear is a rare sight, been twice, once with no visibility the second time a lot better, going back next year for a best out of three :D

Susten was my Fave from the Andermatt loop:

Grimsel was great this year, last time we did not even see the lake due to fog (and the road runs a few feet away from it!)

Check out the Grossglockner webcams , you wouldn't want to be doing it on a bike this week

Shoud be left as a permanent reminder that the way one bod found it one year, is no really reliable guide as to how another bod will find it the next, on any day of the year.

My tips?

Look at the general weather history for the week(s) you are going. They are all available via Google.

Look at the local weather forecast / local newspaper on the day(s) you are thre.

Look out of the window of your hotel in the morning / lunchtime / evening / whenever and make your own mind up.

It's just like being at home really, when you decide whether or not to take an umbrella on the run to Tesco.

To which might be added:

Work out that if bods go skiing nearby on meters deep of snow, at some point the snow does have to start arriving.... And may take more than two minutes to go away again, the following year.

Well, we got back last night.

What a fantastic week:D

We left early last Wednesday using the tunnel and rode down to Beaune, some 500 miles:eek:

Lunch the next day in Grenoble and the start of day 1 afterwards. We caught up and finished day 3 in Bourg St. Maurice as planned. Day 4 back to Grenoble, then the last 2 days getting home via non motorway routes. Grenoble to Troyes and then Troyes to home.

Weather was, on the whole, fantastic, quite warm even on the tops of the Cols. Two afternoons of cloud and light rain was unfortunate and meant we didn't do 2 of the mountains.

We got rooms every night quite easily, but a lot is closing down and the restaurants are very quiet. The Arolla in Bourg St Maurice was closed but we used a biker friendly place nearby that we superb, cheap and had a spottles garage.

La Bonnette was unbloodybelievable, I was a happy chap riding that one.

In total we covered about 2,300 miles and my 1100 GS never skipped a beat, used 500ml of oil.

As predicted day 2 and 3 were the best, day 1 had too much Route Napoleon but it was a good intro. Especially as I hadn't ridden for the best part of 3 years.
