Alternator belt change

After my recent problems caused by the belt (see 1150 engine problems thread) I would advise regular checks on your belts to ensure they are not perished or cracking along the ribs. It is probable that mine was not adjusted properly by the dealer after an engine rebuild. It is expensive if it shreds.

A handy thread this. My alternator belt started to squeal last weekend so probably needs changed as it has done almost 54,000 miles. Must get one ordered this weekend. :)

New belt seems small!

Just fitted a new belt today and it was quite a struggle to get the new one on which was 1cm smaller than the original. I know there must be some stretch though. The old part number was 12.31-7681841-692637 The new one is 11.28-7681841-692637 The bike is an 05 Adventure, any advice please.

Maybe you were supplied/bought the wrong one.

Hi Mark,
I have a 55reg gsa se,when my belt was changed at the 24000ml service earlier this year, the guy who does my servicing, and has a very good reputation, said that he could only just get the recommended belt on,i think it was a 595,he said he was not happy with it as he felt it was just to tight,so he fitted a 615 belt, that was 5k ago and there seems to be no problems.
I have heard that the last of the gsa's did need this longer belt, but i am not sure if that info is accurate.
Perhaps someone here has a difinative answer?

Steve

Just done mine of '04 1200GS.
I hung it over alternator, hooked it on crank pulley, my mate turned the crank pulley with ratchet & socket on left side of bike whilst I held belt on pulley with my fingers from right side. Went straight on first time.

reading on the motorworks site there are 2 belts

611 which is 08 2003 >
595 which is < 07 2003

My question is....

my GS is a 08 2003 registered.... so does that make it manufactured in 08 2003 spec or is it more likely its < = 07 2003???

Put the last 7 digits of your VIN number into this and it will tell you the manufacture date.

If it was registered in Aug 2003 I would guess it will probably have a May/June manufacture date :thumb2

I spoke to Motorworks who kindly told me the correct part number.

Basically my bike is a July manufacture but that doesnt mean it wants the belt from the older models.

I guess BMW must presume that the date on the log book is what we will work from so take that into account when producing information for parts such as "fits 08 03 onwards"

611 will fit all bikes, so need to get stuck in an emergency.

In fact go to your local car spares shop and buy a 4 rib 610 belt , about £4 :D

Does that mean the 611 is for after August 03? :blast According to my vin mine is a November 03

Anyone had trouble getting the cover off with Ohlins shocks?

Anyone had trouble getting the cover off with Ohlins shocks?

Yes but not too difficult to resolve. My bike has had Ohlins on from new, I just undo the bottom mount and pull it forward a little to allow the cover to slide down (the rubber bush on the top-mount means that there's enough play to do this without damage).

My Gs 1150 is 2002, had it from new but only 22,500 miles. Question; Is the alternator belt time or miles when it comes to changing it ?

take the cover off and check it at that age, best to due in the garage than at side of road

Alternator belt change

Is this a hint that while you have my bike in bits I should ask you to change the alternator belt............?

If it is then you better do it, in for a penny, in for a pound, its only money and you can't take it with you:tears

When using the "pry bar under the alternator" method, is the correct belt tension that which allows one to twist the belt 90 degrees ?

Phil

Old thread, but so are the relevant bikes so here goes:

Bosch info (non BMW specific).

Deflection [amount per 200mm Span Length], 10kg force applied.
4 rib belt:
Initial tension 5 to 7mm.
After running the engine for 5 to 10 minutes, re-tension 6 to 8mm.
