Morning all.

As there's no ST section, here I am, although its a fairly general query really! As my ST's now done just on 30k miles, and I'm off to Spain on it next month, I thought I'd treat it to a new belt, having done all the other servicing stuff. Checking the one fitted, its a 4PK592. So, I order a new one, it turns up, I stash it in the garage pending doing the job.

Roll on to last week when I take the belt out of its Jiffy bag. The cardboard sleeve shows its a 4PK592ELAST(582). As I understand it, that means its actually 582mm long, but will 'stretch' (relative term I assume, there's bugger all give in it that I can see....unless my puny, under-developed arms are at fault...) and so can be used where either a 592 (my ST) or a 582 (later bikes?) is specified.

Can anyone enlighten me please? Would I be better off just getting one marked as a plain 592?

Get the right belt. The different lengths are based upon different alternator pull sizes on Denso / Bosch alternators. If you could lever the shorter one on, imagine the loads on the bearings..

Buying the right belt will be cheaper than a new alternator..

Thanks for the reply. Yes indeed, I get that. I suppose I'm just intrigued/confused by Conti's labelling!
