Any reason why I can't use the earlier type of belt on a 2005 bike?

Reason being the later type is set up by setting the distance between the pulleys rather than tension on the belt - this requires a rather expensive BMW tool to set - an eccentric tensioner.

You can use the earlier belt without any problems.

In fact it's better using the earlier belt on an ADV model, as with the later smaller belt the alternator sits very low and if you need to remove the fuel tank the fuel hose link pipe Q/D is too big to go under the alternator.
The earlier belt leaves the alternator higher and the Q/D slides underneth.
