does anyone know of anyone or how to check an alternator windings/charging wiring. fired the bike up this morning all ok but then battery warning sign came on. Battery has been on a ctech charger while its in the garage and the lights on the charger confirm good battery status. Checked battery voltage as 12.79 volts then fired it up and the voltage drops to less than 12v and drops more if lights/indicators used. no increase in voltage if I pick the revs up so I`m assuming no charge. checked belt and alternator is turning over. checked wire through to battery and negative . any other ideas?:nenau. cheers.

It could possibly be the BTY have you access to another BTY you could try , or have you done that ? Worth a check before you start pulling ya bike apart.

Hi, if you mean battery, yep tried that, also left it on the bike to see if it recovers or if there is a drain and after 30 mins or so the battery is back up to 12,79 volts, so i reckon that`s ok.. cheers anyway. oh IT`S IN PIECES , ready for the inevitable. after 15 years with this bike I almost know what i might be doing.(only just.LOL)

I would first remove the tank and check the connections on the alternator.
Then test the voltage output at the alternator.

when mine failed the alloy casing had split open quite easily seen apparently they corrode internally and "burst" the alloy casing and not uncommon not that it really matters if you have already deduced its kaput.
