alternator not chargeing

a newbie here,
i have a r100gs with a poorly alternator
is there anyone out there, in airhead world,who has a process to id. is it the stator or the outer ring? or could it be a gremlin that i know nothing about.?
anyone got intimate knowlege of the alternator?

You haven't given much info, i.e. does is the charge light stay on ? does it light up at all ? have you checked the regulator and diode board and know it's definatly the alternator ?, .

dead alternator

hi steptoe,
i checked the regulator with the info from the forum, put cable between the two points on the plug that go into it. the charge light continued on.
checked the diode board with a test on the big cable, left, and the brush point when engine running and not.
the voltage when not running was about 14.75 and when running about 7.
i assumed, maybe wrongly, with the charge light was still on so it was the alternator?
am i totally off track?
