Me thinks the Alternator on the 1100 is on its way out. Started to make a bit of a racket when started up. Im sure that it can only be comining from alternator.
Read the Clymer manual on replacing it but has anyone got any tips etc that might make the job a bit easier?
Ta very much:beerjug:

Are you sure its not just the alternator drive belt breaking up/slipping.
Worth a look first.:thumb

Already looked and its fine and tensioned proper like.
:P
worth asking though ta

It actually sounds like the bearings are foooooked

Take the belt off.

Spin the alternator by hand and see if it makes a noise, or you if you can feel the bearing as you turn it.

can the bearings be replaced or will i need a complete alternator ?
Yikes and that no doubt will be expensive:(

If the bearings are shot,is it possible to "recondition" an alternator with new bearings and brushes bought as a kit.
Ive done a couple of car alternators like this in the past and its not that difficult.I believe Bosch have an engineering facility that recon them as well.

Dazco,

I've got an alternator laying around. It came from a bike that had only done 2k. It's the high output one, suitable for heated grips. I want £50 for it + whatever the postage is or we could meet half way up the M1

Cheers rob, ill have it all apart tomoro and just make sure it is the bearings and take it from there, was yours off an 1100? and do you know if it would be a straight swap:thumb
if i can get away with just new bearings ill go down that road first, Thanks for the offer and ill keep it in mind:thumb :thumb

:clap well i managed to get some time at work today (out of the rain:) )and got the front cover off and the belt. no noise or rumblings from the alternator when the pulley was spun by hand.
I did notice alot of muck though:eek: thoroughly cleand it all up, put it all back together and hey presto no noise.
Ill keep an ear on it though to make sure(getting paranoid now)
Thanks for the offer of the Alternator rob, if it does explode or die ill be in touch, Loughborough aint that far anyway, if i had a spere 50 id be down tomoro cheers anyway:thumb
