First run to work since Christmas........and the battery light remains on....

Alternator belt fine, so guess it is either the regulator or alternator itself; the bike has heated grips etc, so would guess it has the 50A alternator (albeit, it looks like the 40A one on the Motorworks site). Is there a quick way to check and, in the likely event that the alternator has 'gone west', have any of you a spare one hanging around at the back of the garage that you want rid of?:augie

Bike is an 02 1150GS

Cheers

Pete,
Check the blue wire on the back of the alternator.
This feeds the charge light.

Its not unknown for the wire to corode thru'

Good call....I'll check it...and report back...

Alas......no joy; blue wire, indeed all of the wires in good condition, connections cleaned.......and same symptom....

Could it be the alternator brushes? I've got a similar problem with my K75S and I have removed the regulator/brush assembly and they are stuffed. They are a replaceable item on the K75 but not sure if they are on the GS.

It could be.....I will have to wait to strip it down......unless a suitably priced replacement turns up......

On first start this morning, the bike did graunch a bit (rest of the motor is still silky-smooth even after 83k miles).....I rather hoped that the belt had snapped; unfortunately not......

Cheers

Check to see it the battery is being charged before pulling the alternator off. Meter across the battery with the engine running, 13.5 volts+ ?

Voltage across the battery with engine running.........12volts.....

Guess the new alternator will come in handy!

Check out the brushes first, then rectifier pack and the regulator. cheaper than a new alternator

Got one off the Bay for £57 delivered.......I'll refurb the old possibly.....

Good option, you can take your time with the your old alternator, enjoy repairing it and have a spare.

There is a good chance the regulator is toast.

Bosch part no 1197311233
BMW part no 12311739365

The cost for replacement regulators vary, Motorworks £40 plus. But if your not too picky, and on a tight budget these people

will supply an aftermarket alternative for about €9 plus postage. I've bought starter motor parts from them and can't complain on quality, price or service.
