So a month on the road and I've noticed the marking on all the box's. I'm assuming it's a reaction to road salt. Is this a common thing for the aluminium to do this?

Mine did the same after two weeks on the road, Although not as bad as that. I did ask for new bike to be ACF 50'd, but got a feeling they didn't do the luggage. So now I have cleaned them off with scotchbrite and coated them and the rest of the bike in FS365 after cleaning and when it gets wet.

Although could still do with buffing them up, but its all getting a bit anal and TouraTwat

I was going to send the pics to the dealer, guess thats going to be a waste of time....

As the boxes are bare unlaquered aluminium they need regular cleaning and a wipe over with ACF 50. Considering how much they all cost you'd think they'd at least be clear coated. Polish out the worst marks and look at getting them wrapped...

Paint, powder coat or wrap them and be done with it. If you like the silver look then do them in silver. Utterly stupid idea putting these uncoated boxes on bikes.

If you like them to be silver, Cover them in clear venial film or if you like black then............

Mine did that after the first 2 week summer tour in the Alps, only one day of rain but combined with Dolomite dust on the roads they began to corrode before I got home , bit of a PIA on kit that cost over £600

Had mine two weeks and look worse than that! Complained to dealer this week as he agreed should not be that bad in time used. Warranty claim in with BMW so will find out soon if they will replace. To be honest I agree they should be coated from start!

I wrapped mine in vinyl. Just bought Bumot panniers which are painted black inside and out. Nice quality also.

Agree with the earlier comments, the panniers may well be hard wearing and waterproof but they very quickly look shabby - is that part of the rugged adventure look?.

If you're the sort of person who likes to sit on the garage floor polishing then try T-Cut. I polished a little sample on my top box and it cleaned up like silver. Didn't last long but if you were thinking of wrapping or lacquering then it would get them really clean to start off with .... of course repeated use of T-Cut and a good wax polish may do the trick but that would eat into riding and wine time (not together of course)
