Evening all,

Anyone got Vario Panniers fitted to their GS, could you please let me have the width across the back of the bike with them in the smaller setting (unexpanded). Google isn't giving this evening!

The BMW Aluminium boxes I have on my GSA work out about 990-ishmm's and I'm looking for a thinner solution to aid filtering etc so considering doing away with the Aluminium cases and scaffolding, and getting the Vario's.

Cheers :thumby:

OSBs.

I got Vario Paniers but they are of the bike at the moment but I have measured when collapsed and expanded, and the difference is 50mm or 2" per case. so in other word your bike will be when fully expanded about same width as your handlebars or 100mm/4" narrower when collapsed. My vario panniers are from LC model.

Hope this is helpful an answers your question.

Regards

EV

I have them measured at 827mm in unexpanded setting, but if you discount the thickness of the Welsh Dragon stickers it rounds out at 825mm...hope this helps.

How about some custom made frames and Givi cases. A 100mm wide exhaust can sat parallel to the wheel will allow the LHS to sit as close to the wheel as the RHS. The right can't go any closer without risking the swing arm hitting it.

I have a Givi 2.5 litre fuel can sat on the inside of the RH side case frame. Anything much bigger would hit the final drive or brake on full bump. It's not a huge amount of "lost" storage space TBH.

This is from an old thread on UKGSer

Thanks for all of the information chaps, looks like the difference between Aluminium boxes at 990mm's and Vario's at 920mm's probably isn't worth swapping over for less than a 3 inch gain.

Will do a Google search and see if there are such things as hard skinny panniers for a GS.

Bendy, I'll also have a look at Givi, thanks for the info.

The numbers above appear to be for the expanded Varios...unexpanded comes in at 830mm-ish...see pics

Thank you Daigriff, appreciate the pics, that makes the difference a good 6 inches which is significant and double what I thought. Cheers.

The Varios are great for filtering, completely naff for getting stuff in! I swapped from Varios to GSA boxes and was astounded at the difference ... the volume the exhaust side GSA box is more than an expanded non-exhaust side Vario!
