Hiya Im new to group, I have sat on a gs1100 on saturday and I can touch ground, I am 5ft 5/6 and have longer legs than top half. I am hopefully test riding it on friday, will i be able to make it lower in any way if need be.
The bike I am looking at has 45 thousand on clock and is around 4 and half grand is this good price year 96. Im just not sure whether to pay more and go for 1150 that is if I can live with the size of it though. Any advice will be great.

Is it obligatory if you mention going for a BMW that you are associated with being more mature, Im only 32 currently I ride a bandit 6 and 12.
Cheers
:)

Pah! Place is being taken over by bloody kids!:D

Sounds like you will be fine. If you can touch the ground you are better off than some GS owners I've seen and they manage just fine!

Welcome to the madhouse by the way!;)

Lots of shorter members here manage the GS fine. Just a confidence thing.

The bike does seem overpriced for a '96 with 45k. I reckon you could find a nice 1150 for just a bit more.

There are lots to look at - both private and in dealers as a consequence of folk up (or is it down?) grading to the 1200.

LMS...we have several GS'ers at under 5'2", so you'll be fine.....as Mark said, it's largely a confidence thing.

Do make sure whatever you get has engine bars though......even at well over six foot, I've dropped mine many a time and the bars to work wonders in stopping the damage.

Welcome aboard!

Im a lightweight, 5'7.567" and I manage my 1200 ok. But as Fanum said, bars are a good idea as Im certain it WILL go over at some point when a choose leg vs camber / dip in road scenario goes wrong.

And yes, the guys here try and come over all hip, cool, rad, bad and street...but they are mainly old gits. There's a few of us sub 40 tho ;) :D

The best advice I got on here was, rather than trying to find an early 1150 with high miles go for a late 1100 in mint condition with low miles. And I took there advice and went out and bought a 2004 GS Adventure. Doh :D

Welcome aboard shortie. I am 5'6" and have also owned a Varadero and Africa Twin. It is all about confidence and being careful where you stop etc but I am sure you will grow to love the GS. I like it a lot as it makes me feel 6'5" instead of 5'6". Hope these words of encouragemaent help and good luck with whatever you choose, Ricky.

But while your getting your confidance you could see if anyone has a lower seat to sell or loan, just a thought

I had thought about a lower seat, but have seen a few for sale. Why are they not popular?

Thank God. I thought I was the kid on the block. The poll showed the mean age to be mid - late thirties. Which makes me average if it weren't for the fact that the poll was filled with bearded pipe and slipper liars. Bunch of old tossers sure have taught me some riding manners though. Nothing quite so discouraging as to see your old man's mate screaming past you on the inside of a bend, beard whipping in the breese, still sitting upright with his gut balanced on the tank. Old bast*rd, ...get home and he slips you a quid to wash his bike......Grrrrrrrr

I would say that if you are currently riding a Bandit 6 AND 12 then you legs are long enough to ride just one GS.

I am 5'7 and i ride a adventure. got the lower seat and had bmw lower that by inch and a half. when wearing my bmw boots i can only get one foot on the ground cant do both very well. sometimes have to plan ahead when stopping but dont have any problems riding it and have engine bars just incase.
