An Oil Q Again

I've never been given a posh washer like that - they just give a silly aluminum ring ...that is no different to reusing the old one
Any decent mechanic would know that the "Posh Washer" is a Dowty Seal !! Which to be very honest I have had my doubts about your abilities for a long time

Re "Silly Aluminium Ring" Its a Crush washer And it is Quite different to re-using the old one!!!

in fact !! you should not re use the old one!!!

sure which is why I didn't use the new one as the old one is oil tight on its third change

the point was - I've never had that type of posh washer on any of my 4 BMW vehicles drain bungs - from new, from franchised dealer servicing, or their parts department

go teach someone else all your drivel

Yeah Yeah That's because no manufacturer except probably Scania supply Dowty as standard, but Scania go the extra mile !

BMW use High precision Aluminium "crush" washers that should be changed and torqued to spec, at each service

You are one of those boys who likes to hear his own voice and then gets upset when he gets called out!!!!

Even the one about tapping the 8mm hex back in ??? Not the best idea in the world given that it is already deformed ......

What happens if you re-use the old washer?
I understand completely that both the copper and ali washers are annealed, hence they 'crush' and thereafter can't be 'crushed' any further hence replacing with new each time..... (ali washer may just be pure ali rather than annealed).

But...I have gotten out of that habit for some years now, simply because one time I misplaced the replacement washers but had to get it all back together! I don't have any leaks and I always torque the drain bolt.

What's the worst that can happen? You have weeping drain bolt?

Yes, and no
It's dripping and then you nip it a bit more

Next time it drips again ,you nip it more

And the next time, it drips and you nip it more

and then shit, shit shit ,its stripped the thread

An
And then it's a drain and helicoil.

So do the maths

New washer for 10 oil changes.

0.63. X10. £6.30

New washer, helicoil and 4l oil
Washer 0.63 oil £40 helicoil and tool £10

£50.63

Getting someone to fix it for you

£150.63

The annoying bit is you can't just nip to hallys for a washer, it's an odd size, so I always make sure I have the bits when I give it to my service guy

Well, it would be me fixing, and I'm much more expensive than that

I completely get your thinking and mostly agree. I should really buy a handful of the washers...

But...I have never yet even had a weep from any of the drain plugs. Never say never though. Very annoying they are not a standard size.

Beal -bags of 500 washers to fit engine, gearbox and final drives
Last time i bought them, a few years ago, about £10 a bag.
I’ve still got a few bags of the bloody things, plus 3000 cable ties of various sizes

Now here’s my dilemma, 3.1/2 ltrs of oil in,not a drop showing on glass, turned bike over still no oil on glass, any ideas please
Cheers Baza

When turning the engine over or when the engine is running the oil level drops and can’t be seen in the oil sight glass.

Put the tools down and step away from the bike.

Well there's plenty in it to go for a run and then check sight glass when it's warmed up and top up as neccessary.

I put 4L into my 08 at a change with filter as per the manual but I think a drop less would be better as I could smell oil after a run and sight glass was full and a bit!

Thanks fella’s but the pennies just dropped,if we remember this all started when I over filled it by one litre,so there’s only 3litres left in the bloody can🙄 so I’m 1/2 litre short, would that show on the glass, sorry for being a “Dick” 🫣
Cheers Baza
PS I put Castrol 15/50 in and I’ve found a litre of 10/40 in the garage can you mix them 🤔🤔
