Hi all

Has anyone used the Ancona (Italy) to Cesme (Turkey) ferry? This is the only info I could find here

Turkeyferries.jpg

I think it’s around 2 days long

Yes I know it would be better to ride down to Turkey but have rode down to Greece before and it’s just a matter of time.
As like all I’m limited with time away form work and maybe this would give me a lot more time to explore Turkey (may ride one way)

Any help would be great

Cheers

Louis

That's pretty much all I found, too, although http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/trans/Ship/tk-italy.html is handy

Not fancying 2 nights on the ferry, I went across Greece in a day and travelled Igoumenitsa-Ancona (single overnight, around 12hrs in total). The advantage of this is that the ferry is daily (at least at the time of year I travelled) so I could be a bit more flexible with planning.

Cheers for the reply :thumb

That plan does seem more flexible

I've done that too. Igou to Turkey is easy asit's now just one motorway all the way. Easy.

Ferries for Turkey

I've used both these ferry services in 2009. They're fine.

The Ancona-Igoumenitsa service is excellent. Quite new vessel. There were quite a lot of roadworks and detours close to Igoumenitsa, but otherwise it's a pretty good ride across the top of Greece and reasonably easy one day run to Turkey with a couple of stops. I did Cesme to Ancona coming back (after a month in eastern Turkey, Georgia, northern Iran). It's an older ship but nice way to relax for a couple of nights. I doubt you could do it faster riding around via the Balkan countries (or if you did you probably wouldn't enjoy it). The Cesme service is only twice per week, so a bit inflexible. It also gets heavily booked.

You can buy a ticket for the Igoumenitsa service at Ancona just before you travel. I bought the Cesme ticket beforehand from Anker Travel via the web. Best to pick up your ticket from the the shipping company office the afternoon before departure.

Enjoy your trip! Aussie Brian

You might soon be able to leave it in Turkey. The six month rule looks about to be changed to 2 years. That's if your bike is UK registered.

thanks expatin,it will be good then but now i can only leave it greek island.because I live in scotland its a bit long way every year riding down and making lots of mileage.but i dont know about the Mot my bike will need an mot in october 2011.maybe i should ask the dvla for how long my bike stay in greece without taking it to uk..do you have any idea? many thanks

Did the Igoumenitsa to Venice ferry last November. A pleasant 24 hours. Booked myself and the bike and then paid for accommodation on board. Much cheaper than booking the whole lot before and ended up with a large double outside cabin to myself!!!

You need your own tie down (fortunately had one) as I was offered a piece of string (frayed).

Igoumenitsa to Turkey a doddle.

I have no idea, but I assume there are quite a few Brit expats living in the Islands, so there might be some special arrangement. Check with the DVLA but also the Greek embassy. Depending on how often you intend to use the bike, I'd give serious thought to riding it down each time, you'd miss it in the UK if you left in anywhere.

In November it should be easy to book on board, but in the summer I doubt it. I tried that in August 2009, and ended up paying standard rates and sharing with some strange people.....not as in strangers, but as in odd.

I'd go for the flight seat to save money in the summer, don't try sleeping on deck, as the backpackers and other foot passengers will have grabbed the best spots by the time you've got the bike tied down and gone looking for a quiet area.
