annoying rattle

howdy all, wondering if i could scratch a few heads here??
have a realy annoying intermitent ratle that sounds like its from the right hand cylinder? bit cam chainy?
serviced it and double checked all i can think of;
Valve clearances
End float
new oil, 20/50 and filter
changed the cam chain tensoiners, but it still does it, but not all the time?
Even looked under the tank to make sure i didnt leave any spanners there
Off for a month in morocco next year and dont want it going pop!
any deas?

... the standard 'Adventure' crash bars fitted ? If so, check the welds around the rear upper mounting points, mine broke on both sides leading to just such a rattle, and no it hadn't been dropped Threw them away and now have St. Eptoe head guards fitted

nah, its a standard 2001 1150 gs 27500 miles with wunderlich engine bars, will have look at them though as a did drop it in the mud whilst trail riding
cam chain tensoiners are the updated parts, for the left pot anyway !
what would i need to check on the throttle bodies????????

... when it's 'ticking/rattling' locate the butterfly spindle end on the inside of the throttle body and press it; if it stops the rattle then they're either out of balance or worn, out of balance is best You're looking for a rounded brass coloured protrusion with a surrounding collar.

Of course I may have dreamt the above but the 'Search' facility will undoubtedly assist !

What he said, just follow the throttle cable down to the place where it wraps around the quadrant on the throttle body, put your finger on the quadrant and see if the rattle stops, it is possible to have a good throttle synch and too much cable slack, which will cause the rattle.

Yup worn TB spindle - mine does it too, usually when the bike's hot and I'm stopped at traffic lights etc (if I reach down with my right hand and quite firmly place my finger on the quadrant, it stops).

The usual recommendation is to ignore it until your bike starts sounding like a diesel and then give it to Scriminger who'll refurb your TB for about £50. Don't waste your money on 'ticker killers', they just mask the symptoms without fixing the problem (and due to them placing pressure on one TB spindle, apparently they can cock up TB balance).

I'm currently at the 'ignoring it' stage

thanks guys, will be borrowing a set of vacuum guages at the weekend and take my time. btw, whats the correct technique, set idle then balance or balance then set the idle?

You'll need to read up on this (plenty on here about TB balance if you do a search) - idle and balance is part of the same process, you don't do them independently.

And before you attack it with vacuum gauges set your valve clearances and rocker shaft end float.

Agreed - no amount of TB balance will stop a 'worn throttle spindle' tick (I can attest to that) - I assume the OP has TB balance problems in addition to his tick (otherwise as you rightly say, there's no point).

I would be inclined to leave the bike well alone.. giving it a service prior to the trip to morroco.. and following Steptoes normal advice on what spares to take. Hallsensor... alternator belt. etc.

meanwhile. the best cure for the tick is a pair of earplugs.

and ride the thing.

Cant see throttle bodies being worn at only 27K miles.
Better earplugs cure the strange noises paranoia.

Neither could I until I bought my current 1150. 24k miles and they were worn to bu**ery - I could hear them even with earplugs in. Swapped them for used ones from Motorworks, problem solved.

Having said that the TBs on my previous 1150 were still tick-free at 39k miles when I sold it

thanks for all the info guys, bike running like a dream,
end float and valves rechecked, throttles balanced and guess what......
rattle still there
held the throtle bodies to check for them being worn? rattle still there
took it for a ride and guess what, oblertone, bingo got the revs right, speed right and then came the rattle Grr! put right foot up on the engine bar! no rattle bit too dark now to take the tank of etc and retighten up the bolts, but a least i know it aint gonna go bang (unlike my f800gs i had previous) want to keep this one as shes a good 'un

No need ...

... to take the tank off to check, it'll be the rearmost bolt mount, the one you need a long reach socket to get to ! Get a torch and look at the end nearest the engine while flexing the bars, if you see a crack on the weld line, that'll be the culprit

The RH one tends to rattle more because the left hand one has the TPS to damp it, but when the wear gets really bad both sides rattle. In fact the LH one on my 850 is worse than the RH.

The rattling is much worse if there's always tension in the throttle cables - leave half a mm of slack (which you should have anyway) and it's much better.
