I was reading a thread about service costs and it was mentioned that a service AND annual inspection bumped up the bill.

I have just had the 6000 mile service done by Bath Rd M/C in Bristol ( at what appears to be a reasonable cost) but the bike is a year old in 8 weeks time. Does this mean I have to book it in again for an annual check ?

Before synthetic oils, car servicing always used to be something like " 12000 miles or every 12 months whichever comes sooner" to take into account that some things deteriorate on time and some on use.

BMW are just doing the same so you will need to check with your dealer that they have done the annual bit and not just what they would have done had it been 6000 miles at 6 months. They should have used their initiative.

Looking at the service info that I have the main difference I can spot is a hydraulic fluid change in the brake wheel circuits. I believe that this is primarily an anti corrosion issue but I'm not certain.

No, you don't need to book it in again. Annual inspections are for people who don't use their bikes much and therefore don't reach 6000miles before a year. They are a way to ensure all bikes are kept to an acceptable standard of safety and reliability. Your next inspection will be 6000miles or a year from now, whichever comes first. :)

Not what I've been told. I've been led to believe that both are needed as the annual inspection covers things not included in the 6k service. I got my 6k done in June, the annual is also due in October (probably will have covered 9k by then) - according to my dealer.

Any definitive answer?

Definitive answer is: If your dealer feels you should go back for annual inspection in October, then go back in October. If you fail to see the logic behind that and feel that everything should have been done during the service period and that your dealer is simply trying to make more money out of you, then change your dealer.

My BMW dealer here in Greece only sees the bike every 3000miles for oil changes and 6000 miles for servicing and he is perfectly happy with that.

Have a look at the maintenance plans in your handbook. Notice if there are differing requirements for the mileage and year service functions? I bet there are, and therefore if it's not stamped up, the service record is incomplete. I for would look for the date and mileage being both stamped up if I was buying a 2nd hand bike.

If you google the 1200 GS service plan you will likely find the pdf that I downloaded giving details of the service schedules. It was off one of the GS sites - I think the US adventure rider one. If you cant find it post your e mail addy and I will mail it to you.

Anyway, this pdf shows what looks to me like official BMW documentation. It shows 2 sevices - the 6000 mile and the annual inc the 6000 mile. The difference between the 2 seems to be just the hydraulic oil change in the wheel circuits. In other words, the annual includes everything done in the 6000 mileplus some more.

Personally, I would take the same casual line that apparently the Greeks take - the 6000 is good enough on its own. But thats not the official system they want you to follow. So talk to Bath road (how much did they charge by the way - my service is coming up and they are my local dealer) and find out whther they did the extra bits required annually or not, assuming that this matters to you.

Labour in Greece is cheap. My 6000 mile service cost me 160 euro. That is about 110 pounds. That is the price the official dealer charges including parts etc. How much is the equivalent in the UK??

The service schedules can be found in the R1200GS FAQ, in the FAQ section! :D

Yes, those are the same ones. Any comments on the service costs? The Greek price for the 6000 mile is not a lot of help here in the UK.

I just had a 30k service done at Rydales in Cardiff. This was just the mileage related service (same as 6k). My brake fluid was changed last August so I am happy for it to be in the bike until the 36k service (I don't understand why BMW want to change it every year when VAG are happy to leave the same fluid in for 2 or more years).

Anyway, the cost of this service was £129.09

Parts £9.81, oil Castrol GPS £14.25, labour £100.05, Tax £19.23

Despite them charging almost £17 for oil I am happy with the price. They have moved on since the issues of last year. They seem to have plenty of staff now.
