Just took my 06 GSA out this morning and thought it had a oil smell to it, an and on visual inspection i found this.

<a href="http://s557.photobucket.com/albums/ss12/lotsoftourqe/?action=view&current=IMG_0756.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss12/lotsoftourqe/IMG_0756.jpg" border="0" alt="Oil"></a>

anyone here had this ? or maybe happens to know whats could be the cause of it.

thanks

Thats a dirty clutch slave cylinder ??:nenau

Whats the fluid level in the handlebar reservoir like ?

BTW check the top screw on the starter motor cover isn't loose.

If it's not the clutch - There's a breather on top of the gearbox. Is the gearbox level ok?, have you been upside down in a ditch?

Thanks

Clutch fluid level seems ok, way above minimum level.

The muck is more oily than the picture let one to see, and it is also smooth to touch, which let me to believe it is oil and not clutch fluid. and there is a fine oil film from the clutch slave cylinder, and down the rest of the rear housing.

Bike havent been upside down yet, but could an overfilling of the gear oil send out via the breather ?

Thanks

Kresten

clutch fluid on that bike is mineral oil, not ordinary brake fluid.

Washed it all off

Will have to check gear oil levels and take a trip on the bike in the morning , maybe the location of the leak will present it self this way. :comfort

Just to rule out it is oil from the clutch housing, What's behind the clutch housing the clutch slave cylinder connects to? should it be dry, or is there fluid in there that could leak.

That looks exactly the same as I had twice on my 06 1200GSA. Apparently one of the seals failed and Barhnstomers replaced under warranty, however I belive you have to replace the whole cylinder.

P/N:21527675101 output cylinder

Check with your dealer first

Good idea to clean it off and check it as you go. As for behind the clutch slave cylinder - there is a seal that stops gearbox oil coming out. Link to pic, item 2 is what your looking at.

Oil leak

Check what the oil leaking is - hydraulic or gearbox.
I had a small leak (on R1200RT) of gear box oil -coming out through a small oil seal inside the clutch actuation rod mechanism. It drips down under the black plastic actuation fitting in your photo. Was replaced by dealer for £80.00 as out of warranty.

Went to a bike meet in Germany and a friendly kraut pointed at mine, said it was leaking and said it was a common fault, so I cleaned it with the jet wash and some degreaser and never had a problem since, bloody germans, full of sh*t. :augie

What a great site

Thanks gents, what a fantastic site this is. Lots of experience and advice to be shared. Based on your inputs i can give it a go on trying to locate or narrow down the problems to a few possible, and by the sound of it affordable repairs.

:thumb2 and :beerjug:

And the winner appears to be....

The nedflanders “Kraut” solution. :clap

Washed all the muck and oil film off, checked that gearbox appeared full of oil. Rinsed and dried outside surfaces. Took the bike out and went trough a series of low revs, up and down the gears, and ending with high speed and high revs.

But after doing this twice on straights and twistie's i was unable replicate the apparent fault ie. to generate oil film anywhere.

Should be a relief but makes one wonder where the initial oil is missing from, so I guess the dealer will have to check for the gremlins.

But for now oil is deffo inside the moving parts, the sun is shining and and there are more miles to be driven. :bounce1

So to fix an oil leak you just wash your bike?,them germans think of everything!

not worth the hassle

I had this on my GS, its the seal behind the slave cylinder,it wasnt pissing out so I just used to check the oil level in the gearbox now and then, was like that for about a year.:eek

I had it fixed along with the front push rod seal under warrenty coz it was free just b4 the warrenty run out,if I had to have paid I would have just lived with it.:nenau
