Well, ive just taken this out of a 165k km R1200RT, excessive wear on where the main bearing sits, so needs replacing, and of course, BMW are good enough to not sell that individually, so means a new damn axle!!!

just letting you guys know, that if you are getting up there in the mileage, if your bearing goes, it may be worth checking this

The one on the left is what ive taken out of this RT

That looks almost the same as what happened to the lad touring down in Argentina. The drive was making a hell of a noise turned out the bearing was spinning on the axle I think.

edit. Those particular axles look different to each other tho'

100k miles? skim the surface, metal spray it back, skim to size, refity with new bearing - jobs a good un. No different to recovering a crank bearing at high mileage.

Different types of phonic wheel slots, those two axles are incompatible. Unless you can somehow change the square wave signal frequency of the rear wheel speed sensor, you're going to have speedo and ABS system problems.

Can the worn axle surface be spiral welded and reground back to standard size, or ground undersized and then bond a metal sleeve/regrind to restore the correct size

phonic wheel slots?as phonics are to do with sounds think you are confusing the issue, although I have been known to talk bollocks meself:D

Square wave signal, not phonic as in audio. Just a common term used in describing the ripple from the sensor.

Yep that is exactly what has happened to mine too...

but i am in Fu:censor:king Argentina...

i contacted BMW London(vines) my dealer and they told me the same.. they dont just sell the parts only the bearings and seals...

also asked James sherlock & Motor works(banners above) and they told me the same..

so you either have to get a compatible second hand one.. or get whole new one from BMW... for ... 1100 pounds... F:censor:k that...

there was one on ebay.. but it has gone to a new home in Argentina..:thumb:thumb

i did ask down here if i could have it welded and resized back to normal.. but the Machine shop here thinks that if the weld splits or dosent last it will break apart and bollocks all the FD anyway... so while i dont like it a replacement has been sent to me..

good luck

James

Also talk to @Steptoe who might have a spare.

Metal spray the damaged area and grind back to size. it's well proven technology. I had power station shafts repaired like that back in the 1980s.

Its also less heat stress on the part so less likely (but no certainty) to damage the hardening and tempering on the gears and splines
