I received a letter from Cannon BMW this morning advising me my 2004 1200GS (with ABS) needs a brake modification.

Quote "During continued product testing BMW have discovered a potential problem which under extreme circumstances could affect the braking system of your motor cycle. They have advised us of a small modification which is required to overcome this"

I've already had the ABS wire routing safety check back in May, but Cannons do occasionally suffer from @rse and elbow syndrome so they may think they've not done it.

Anyway, I cannot ask Cannons as they are shut today so I checked the VOSA site and that only has the ABS wire recall. I then "Googled" a few searches and found this on a US site....

On certain motorcycles, under rapid, repeated, and unusually harsh braking, loss of ABS capability could temporarily occur. Dealers will add a physical restriction, in the form of a banjo bolt with a flow restrictor to the brake line, and on certain models dealers will install new front brake discs of a slightly larger thickness free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during May 2006

I am sure the other recalls (Brakes and Technology update) I've had came direct from BMW UK whereas this one comes from Cannons.....Hmmm

Anyone else had a letter??

This flow restrictor mod has been around for ages (months) - don't know why you weren't informed long ago. I have missed out on all this fun cos I don't have ABS.

brakes recall

My '05 GS had its 6000 service in May and the modification was done by my local dealership at no extra cost. Sounds as though your dealers are a bit slow off the mark. Hope you get yours sorted OK.

Any pics of the flow restrictor mod, before & after if poss so I know what I`m looking for! I had my 54 12GS in for the 12 month service in September but they didn`t mention any recalls or mods done on my bike.

Cheers

The mod seems to replace the original fitment dome allen headed banjo bolt which connects the braided hose onto the brake master cylinder with a hex headed (normal bolt head) banjo bolt - this hex headed banjo bolt seems to contain some gizmo (or a bigger hole down the middle!) to give more powerful residual braking should the need arise.

Hope that some help - go check your banjo!! Sorry no pics.

As usual dont blame me etc etc... :D

Prior to having the "Banjo Bolt" change,I did have the ABS act up and not work properly. The computer kept record of this when I went in for the 600 mile checkup.

After the "Banjo bolt" replacement all things seemed wonderful....until....a week ago when I was flicking the front brake lever to the "beat of a song playing in my head :loopy " ... as I proceded to go from a stop light, the ABS lights started flickering... and as I attempted to stop, the bike began a forward-catch/brake-release,then catch/brake-release repeatedly until I stopped.
I stopped turned off the bike, turned the bike back on,let the computer do it's thing and then all things were "good"!!!
I still don't think this "Banjo Bolt" replacement is gonna cure this problem.
It happened again yesterday. After starting the bike,I flicked the front brake lever and as I pulled out of my driveway, the ABS lights were flashing and the brake-release-brake-release.. situation happened again.

Cheers Cestria :thumb I`ve just checked mine & they have changed the banjo bolt to a hex head, they must`ve done it while changing the brake fluid :thumb

Thanks again :bow :thumb

Phoned Cannons this morning, spoke to the lovely Kate and yep its the Banjo bolt recall.....great to see they are "up to speed" on the safety recall stuff, only 6 months behind the other dealers is probably an improvement for them. From a Sales point of view Cannons are first rate, the sales manager Tony is a top bloke, but they keep letting themselves down on the servicing side.

Yep, just got my recall notice from Cannon this morning (Nov 2). I've not had a bike from them before, and maybe won't again if this is their idea of customer service.
