Another final drive bearing failure. :-(

Title says it all, am sitting at Pidcock BMW and they say it's the worst bearing failure they've seen and not to ride the bike as it could go at any time.
£300 to repair but not in stock so going to have to leave it here.
Have messaged Mikeboy so fingers crossed but need to make a decision on how to get back to Brum. Train most likely. :-(

Not happy obviously.

Has it gone or is it about to go?

If it's not gone Id ride it home 'slowly' and defo get Mike to do it as he'll do the whole thing which is what it needs
 
Not gone yet but a lot of movement in all directions so not going to risk it just yet.

They're ordering parts for now and I'll see what Mikeboy can do...
 
what if its allready had a second hand replacement,the VIN may not be the same if the FDis from an older/newer model?
 
How many miles has it done?
what year is it?
These bearings usually go over a period of time.When I first detected excessive play it went another 3k with no probs at all.
 
just lots of play and thats the worse they've seen!

On my HP2 the back wheel was being held on by the disc brake.

Was there not a thread about some Aussie guy who had a lot of play and still needed to cross a continent and it did

Also has it pissed out all its oil yet? - If not I'd defo ride it home

If you leave it with them this is my prediction:

You'll wait a week for the part and they oly fit the main bearing and two months later it will start showing play and your life will be a worry of when will it go and for that pleasure they'll charge you £300

Or you could ride it home, get Mike to do it for c£450-500 and he'll do the lot and you'll know it's sound for a very long time and may never go again
 
It's a 58 plate, I brought it last summer with under 4,000 miles on, was in for the 12,000 service.
Obviously I could have risked and ridden it home and if I hear back from Mike I'll probably do that but at the moment they're just ordering the parts, it sounded like they were going to so a full overhaul, all seals and bearing but I'd still rather Mike does the job so I'll see what happens.

My '58 plate GSA had a new FD at 10k due to bearing play. Perhaps there was a bad batch?
 
I noticed rear wheel play in my '08 GSA when it had 6K on the clock. Dealer said it wasn't a concern. At 18K it went back and the same dealer said they weren't happy with me riding the bike home. They gave me a loaner and replaced the bearing the next day. Bike was 6 months out of warranty but BMW coughed up the full amount under goodwill. Bikes at 34K now and there's no play whatsoever.
 
Get Mikeyboy to do it as he will do a better job that a dealer as he isn't governed by book time. I've had 2 rebuilds in 104,000 miles and now budget for a rebuild every 2 years just to be on the safe side with quality bearings.

Some people think you should never have a bearing problem but it is a known weak spot so just accept it, get if fixed properly and enjoy the ride.
