Another Gearbox Oil Leak

I've just noticed my bike (2005 1200GS, 25,000 miles) is beginning to weep oil from the front of the gearbox. I didn't extend the warranty - too expensive.

Does anyone have experience of getting BMVV to sort this out either completely or partially from goodwill?

If not, can anyone tell me how much am I looking at to get it repaired at the dealer?

PS I would really appreciate sensible answers only rather than "You should have bought an 1150" etc.

Bennets do a warranty for about £16 a month for an 06 GSA, no contract and can be determined whenever you lay the bike up and resurrected in the spring!

So take it out now, and find your problem in a month or so? but make sure this defect is covered.

Williams Manchester did my gearbox oil leak 3 months out of warranty..
and all FOC

I was very nice about it when i rang them, asked the young lady if::::
she thought the oil dripping out of my motor/gearbox could be that problem the 1200's have

Av noticed that a few 1200s are havin gearbox leaks , is this a fault that's showing its self after a few years ?
Are these isolated incidents or more regular...n are BMW addressing the problem?

BMW in Northampton did mine - after asking them to ask BMW for a goodwill gesture, they agreed to all parts and 50% labour. 20K miles, 04 bike and 2 years out of warranty.
Not great that it went in the 1st place and is a known problem, unhappy that it still appears to have cost me but kinda grateful anyway they stumped up to help - but 2 weeks later I returned it as another seal on back wheel/drive shaft was leaking, this was repaired FOC- So, well done to the garage and good customer service.

Mines just started seeping oil..... 7500 miles and 3 years old nearly.... i picked it up 2nd hand back in March when it only had 1500 miles on it !! Previous owner spent most of the time farkling and polishing it...

The only thing I can think that caused it, apart from it happens to all of them, is that when it had its service the oil level filled the sight glass completely... Its taken 3 weeks and 1500 miles for the top of the level to be visible again. Do you think overfilling could have caused some seals to go pop ???

Gutted as I'm going to Scotland weekend after next for a week, and I really wanted to give the GS a good thrashing over those lovely roads. Borrowing my old mans R1200R instead. possibly more suited to road thrashing, but I know I'll have to temper my riding as its not my bike.... Oh well... Bet it feckin rains now aswell !!

Had this on my 05 GS last Autumn. About 6 months outside the 1 year warranty which came with the bike when I bought it second hand. North Oxford were great. They spotted it at service, checked with BMW, and did the whole thing FOC. Even picked the bike up from deepest west Worcestershire a few days later when they could fit it in and dropped it back.

The impression I had was that it was a batch of faulty oil seals, and they knew the chasis numbers of those bikes affected. As soon as they'd matched mine to a BMW database they took full ownership of the problem regardless of the expired warranty.

Despite my frustration, I hav ebeen able to get some joy out of BMW in the past. Outside of warranty they made a goodwill contribution to a corroded engine plate, fuel pump controller that went pop and alternator drive oil seal. I'm hoping they'll play the game over this oil leak.

I recall reading in Bike magazine recently some quote from a BMW GB chap along the lines of "There have been some issues with oils seals but BMW have sortd them out even outside of warranty." If anyone can tell me which issue this was, I'd be very grateful.

I'm off on family hols at the weekend for two weeks, so I'll be taking it up with dealers after that.

Just spotted a gearbox oil leak on my 05 GS. Should have seen it earlier really, but I don't do much in the way of cleaning and the other muck hid it. Had the bike 3 months from a non BMW dealer who had traded it in and they have booked to get the work done next week.

Seems BMW did not co-operate about helping out with the fix, the bike is not on the list of possible contenders for a dodgy seal - apart from the obvious fact that it has one!

My bike had done about 16000 when it started to leak..... done about 19000 now and all is well..

Had mine done last week after I spotted the oil seeping out. About 19000 miles and an '06 bike. I'm about three months out of warranty and they did another goodwill gesture with 100% parts and 50% labour - around £200. It had already contaminated my clutch, so they changed that too. Hopefully this will last for a bit now. I'm just awaiting now the dreaded fuel pump controller to go and the ringantenna to fail. Then I should be good?! Final drive seal was replaced last service...

Had my gearbox seals done a year out of warranty and my second set of new disks FOC.

Get on the phone to Bmw customer services about it,they will tell you to take it to your local dealer for them to establish what the problem is and report back to Bmw to get the ok to do it.

mine is an 05 with 25k up it as well.

Hi Andy, where can I check for that and how do I know whether its been done or not? If I remember right there is a site listing recalls and such but can't remember where exactly - must dig deeper. Or is it a case of calling BMW? I'm actually pretty sure it hasn't been touched. Though would be good to get sorted before the problem occurs...

My mate had it done on his late 06 bike and it was picked up at service.

I've just posted in the dealers section:
After three attempts by my local dealer (SSB) BWM have agreed to pay 100% parts and 100% labour.
1200GSA about six months out of warranty, 17,000 miles.
