Another Gearbox Oil Leak

Another one on the list

Just got my bike back after the annual service to be told that I have leaking gearbox / engine seal and possible contaminated clutch. Bike is an 05 R1200GS with 35k on the clock.

After trawling the forums it seems it's a common problem. I have put in a request for an out of warranty repair with my local BMW dealer. Should get to know tommorrow. I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

North Oxford changed mine when they spotted it at the 18,000 mile service. Bike was a June 05 GS and was out of warranty and it was done FOC. At the same time they renewed the clutch FOC.

It took them 2 seconds to confirm they'd do it for nothing. It was almost as if they had a database of chasis numbers for all those bikes affected. I was told the problem was due to a faulty batch of seals.

I must use this forum more often

I have just paid my local dealer (non BMW but good) £ 40.00 to replace the gearbox seal on my 06 gs

He did coment that the replacement bmw part was far superior to the one he took out

Seems like a great price but I thought the gearbox seal was a "split bike in half" job?

Seems a very reasonable price, are you sure it was the gearbox seal or could it have been the final drive seal( thats about £40 worth of labour)????

Can anyone tell me if the final drive seal is leaking, which side does oil come out? I noticed today after a 50 miler that a brown weep seemed to have appeared under the "black rolling axle" where it turns in the swingarm.
macca and out.

Could well be. It`s generally a very fine mist.

Give it a good clean and check again. It`s a quick and easy fix especially if it`s still under warranty.

will do Sarg,
had bike a weekend and looks like, final drive seal, and front engine cover need sorting and I'm watching the gearbox casings like a hawk!! Had engine cover done on a 1200s some while back so kind of expect it now on the GS!! Think I might ask for the black cover, reckon it will look good.
Still, all this is not a good reflection of BMW amongst all my jap 4 riding friends.......

Have checked the final drive this morning, and there it is; a brown sludge heading south from the seal.
Q is: what is the volume thats meant to be in there? and I wonder if I can ride it to the nearest dealer 30 miles away?
Think I will watch right handers on way!!:)

Yep, you should be OK. My seal started weeping when I was in Ireland last year. Called my dealer and they said it should be OK because the amount leaking is very small. I finished the holiday and rode home no problem.:thumb

**brown sludge heading south from the seal.**

Brown! mine was black and stank like CAT pee:eek::augie

PS: water could turn it Brown thou,,

cat pee..... that is gross.
Hadn't thought about water causing the brown stain......
At least I know I can ride to dealers ok.
I'll let you all know how the dealers treat a cutsomer who returns a bike after 7 days with a genuine warranty claim, and a possible further claim for engine front cover corrosion setting in.
