59 plate GSA 16K on the clock runs poorly on the over run and low idle speeds end of the exhaust very sooty, runs alright at higher revs but sometimes at tick over, it can be heard one cylinder isnt firing, so take it back to the dealers, they test it and announce the ECU has failed and replace, I pick it up and within 15 miles the end can is covered in soot and it is running like a bag of shite at slow speeds, back to dealers they retest it and tell me it is fine, being fair to them they took it back in and had look around they tell me they can hear it isnt running right but cant locate the problem with the computer this has dragged on for 3 weeks now, they now say they need some specialist to come and look at it, any one had a similar issues, again being fir to the dealer they have taken it back at a very fair price against a new 1600, but thats not the point I didnt want to sell it the plan was to keep it and get the gt, how ever if it is creating soot it must be doing damage ???

Regards Eco

This is a wind up in't it, need a specialist are they for real ??
Current issues with DOHC twins are exhaust valves seizing, lambda sensors & vibration, Suggest they have a look at the first 2.

Another defective bike enters the dealer chain- and that's why I won't have another BMW!

re thanks but

Sky waalker, this is the sinlge cam version, does this ake any difference to your prognosis??

I take it the basics have been covered such as correct valve clearances etc ?
Has the bike fell over at some point ?
Its not unknown for the spark plugs to fracture higher up the inside of them causing sparks to brake down.
The main stick coils are another favourite. When you pull them off the main plugs slightly you should be hearing a "crackling" noise as the spark jumps the gap. The coils can break down under load.

i suppose it should be no surprise that the odd dealer technician runs out of ideas once that have done everything the computer tells them, even if BMWs training is supposed to be v good

on a purely mechanical view, as has been said valves, compression, swapping plus/coils and even the injectors over, have seen a few knacked injectors on various car and bike engines over the years

Take a main spark plug out from each head and see which (or both) is sooting up. Whichever is sooty probably has either a problem with a weak spark or the lambda probe is faulty causing the fuel injection to run too rich on that cylinder.
