I have a burglar alarm that dials me if it activates. I have been having problems with my internet in that it is dog slow. (BT). All tests have shown that incoming signal is OK. All hardware is OK. I have replaced sockets and router. The problem has been happening over last 3weeks.
I have found that since the BT line tests my burglar alarm is now showing a fault light. If I reset alarm fault clears but internet slows again. So this is the problem area but I have no idea how to fix it.
Any experts out there who can help me?
Thanks

What has changed in the past three weeks since the broadband has gone slow?

Are you on wired connection (does the PC have a wire into the broadband)

Thanks for your replies. I will try and check out what you suggest this weekend hopefully but I am away for most of it. Will let you know soon as I have checked things.
FYI though my router to PC connection is hard wired (Ethernet cable). The alarm had its annual service and this points to it def being something to do with the alarm but I don't know how to fix it. When BT carried out their system checks wherever they did fixed my internet speed. But the alarm control panel now shows a red light. All I need to do is reset the alarm to clear the fault light but if I do this the internet will go back to slow. :blast
The alarm people aren't much help as the reset works. So I am stuck between BT and alarm people as both systems work independently but not together.
Thanks for your views /help

We had this on an installation at work. As others have suggested, we got the alarm company to fit a filter. Can't believe they don't do it automatically.

Back to my point about the filter. When the alarm fails to contact the server, it throws a fault and stops trying to call the server - so your internet works fine. When you reset the alarm, it starts calling again and down goes the internet until the alarm faults and throws a fault.

When the alarm company did the annual service, they either removed or bypassed the filter leading to your problems. Or the filter is bad - but that would be unusual.

Thanks for this mvrandery nice explanation that I am going to use on Tuesday when I contact the alarm people. Very grateful mate :beerjug:

Quick update. I contacted the alarm company and this week an engineer came. I used your explanation mvrandery as to what the fault is. He fitted a new box complete with filter. All is now working correctly . So thanks for your help.:beerjug:
