Not sure if this is possible or not but...anyone tried getting rid of the cat in the standard 12 Y piece? I've heard (maybe somewhere on here) that the cat internals are faily soft and its possible to break them up and remove them somehow. Give it a good poke with a half inch socket extension or something similar would be my first guess. This would save the expense of a new 'performance' Y piece if its possible and hopefully liberate a pony or two, as well as giving you the option to use leaded should you ever have to.
Go on Mouse you know you WANT to try this....:D

:D

I have thought about it. Actually what I was thinking about was cutting out the section of pipe containing the cat and getting a Y piece mae to fit it. But I don't think this would have any advantages, as you couldn't really refit the cut out section very easily.

What puts me off though, is all the posts by people who have fitted a "full Remus" or whatever and then found it makes the bike run lean, therefore they have to buy a chip to correct this.

So I'm not overly convinced I want to remove the cat only to find I need to spend 300 quid correcting the fuelling issues, or more than that when I hole a piston.

It has been done....I think it may have been on Advrider but I remember the report with pics...the guy sliced it open, gutted it and welded it back together.....

A bit of digging over there should unearth it ;)

no need to cut it open if you can get to it with a rod .
But the question is the lambda censors moniter oxygen in the system & adjusts the fuel mixture constantly so will it not adjust to a new system on its own:confused:

I did it to the 1150 cat, seems to work okay, dosent run too rich, but now a bit less rich since the steptoe link went in

Thanks for the input guys.
I was hoping to get a definitive answer that cat removal is possible without cutting and welding etc., and that the system would compensate and sort out the fuelling issue (if there is one), as I would keep the standard can.
I'll have a snoop around Adv rider and see what turns up.

If the fuel injection runs in closed loop mode (ie using the lambda sensors) constantly, then I would expect it to adjust to a different airflow. But, based on peoples' experience with having to change various fuel code plugs on the older bikes, it may not do this.

And I would have thought that lowering the back pressure in the exhaust would make the bike run lean, not rich - am I wrong here?

What are the real advantages of removing the cat? You can use leaded petrol if you like, it'll just stop the cat working, which if you were thinking of removing it anyway is clearly not a problem :)

A bit of extra noise and 1-2 extra bhp?
