Anyone else getting 'check oil' every now and again

I did, but what is the point of both a sight glass and a fecking idiot warning display on the clocks

Just use the sightglass, like normal

Pointless electronics for the new breed of biker, who BMW think needs a message display board to check if his bike is functioning ok

Oil Level Warning
Tyre Pressure Warning

Load of tosh, cause more intermittent problems than it's worth:rolleyes:

pointless comments from numpties you mean

........and have any hope of a claim for a seized engine or valve trouble rejected by BMW if it ever happens :blast

Working with a lot of Landies, I thought you might 'get it'...............senseless electronics, developed for the hard of mechanical sympathy:P

You keep banging on about 'getting it', never mind:D

Some of the extra sensors are 'Senseless' yes, I agree with you.........in particular, the Tyre pressure warning seems an unnecessary bit of overkill- if you can't feel that you have a semi flat tyre, you shouldn't be riding anyway IMO.

On the other hand.......even Landies have a dipstick AND an oil pressure warning lamp.

How many people can HONESTLY say that they check the oil level on their car EVERY DAY, or even just once a week, really truthfully?

You seem to switch camps between slagging the toilet to loving it and praising it quite a lot Johnny.......I'm just calling it straight as I see it.

Thinking back , I haven't squatted down to check the oil window on either the GSA or the daily runaround brick for at least a fortnight.........I have no doubt whatsoever that the levels in both are spot on, but I also know as well that I OUGHT to have checked them.

Don't forget either that the light is about pressure, whereas the window only shows level.......Perhaps the difference between the two is less important on the Oilheads than it is to the toilets, but I don't know....do you?

Makes a lot of sense to me, that does :thumb2

Some people prefer to help and some just like to stir shit (JB)

Are you familiar with the 'Check Oil' message on the 1200GS's (Oil or Water Cooled types) on the LCD info screen, Bill??

It flashes like the TPC monitor and is fecking annoying especially when you manually checked either the oil or tyres and they're fine, the sensors are faulty perhaps instead:rolleyes:

It's not an oil pressure warning light, IIRC they have that as well just like most vehicles

Forgive me if I am wrong but I thought the whole idea of this forum was help people or share ideas and experiences not to piss other people off.

You've not been here long enough yet:comfort:D

Nope, I've not ridden one yet.

What difference does that make?

If geesexr is correct (and it seems a very reasonable diagnosis) then the system is doing its job and only reporting because the new bikes have (as we know) got thinner oil in to bed the rings etc in before the 600 mile service.

Tyre pressure sensors, I share your opinion of.
Ice warning lamps (on bikes or on cars) are, IMO, more dangerous than good...in that they give dopey riders false confidence that it's not icy, only for them to slide off on a patch of ice in a shadowed dip, so yes, useless......leave it to the rider to sense that 'Fekk, it's cold' :blast

This one though, it looks like we'll have to agree to differ on........if you can honestly say that you check your little window on the side of your GSA every day, well, good luck to you.....I KNOW I don't :kissy2

1200's from IIRC 2008 have a LCD message info display on the dash clocks

The bike contains sensors for

Air Temps (Ice Warning)

Oil Level (in the crankcase, in addition to a real sightglass and oil pressure warning light)

TPC (tyre pressure monitors, as an optional extra)

If a sensor OR there is a real fault with a component, these messages falsh incessantly on the dash, warning the rider of ICE/Low Tyre Pressure or Low Oil and can be very galling, especially when you know the tyres or oil are the correct operating level, after a manual check

Then you have to got back to the dealer because there is a faulty sensor and have it checked or replaced either on warranty or at your own expense

Hence the comments of stupid sensors, for 'dumbed down' riders who either don't know what to check or are too lazy to check the bike has enough oil by looking in the sightglass or tyre pressures with a guage

It's the control of the rider/bike by the asylum

Hear hear geesexr, I have noticed the same, seems to be sport to just splat crap on posts that are genuinely looking for advice and or comradeship.

This forum has changed since its introduction all those years ago.

Back to topic BTW my oil level warning light started coming on at approx 3500 Miles,

The light is only for level NOT pressure. thank goodness.

Other wise my bike would still be in Spain.

With regards to useless warnings,

Last year I looked after a mates Motorcycle Shop n Workshop while he had a well earned break.

We played a game called "Check the Tyre Pressure". On every bike that darken the doors, Almost three quarters of the bikes that came in to workshop had from under inflated by ten pounds to as good as flat tyres, including a really shinny GS.

I have never had a 'check oil' message but mine mostly displays the '------' cannot check oil message - at leat until the bike has been ridden and is thoroughly warmed up - then when it is at a standstill it displays oil level ok.

Must admit it all seems a pointless to me as most of the time it is not telling you the true state of the oil level, so one could be riding for a long time with low oil before the system can check properly which would not be good!

I don't trust it so I check the window before I ride - it is the most accurate, simplest and safest way.

I agree, so simple to check, ;)

Oh, it's simple, just remember to stand it upright or center stand!

Sh*t myself when viewing an empty window in Spain last week.... Thank fully my mate reminded me to stand it up, which is just as well as all the fuel station had was tractor oil!

Got stuck in traffic on a severe downhill and the light came on for oil. Stopped and looked at the window and was horrified to see it totally empty. Left it for 10 mins on centre stand and the window was full again. WEIRD..............
