I have noticed lately that the transition from 2nd to 3rd has been a little difficult. I'm not 100% sure if its not coming out of 2nd or not going into 3rd :blast
Usually a gentle kick up changes gear, but occasionally that isn't enough , it needs a bit of a stronger kick.
Has anyone else had this ? what was the problem ?

cheers Richie

When was the gear oil last changed and is it when the bikes warmed up or cold started ? :augie

I changed mine on Weds and changed the final drive oil at the same time, the clutch and gears feel like new now after feeling somewhat sticky 2006 GSA.

Check the linkage from the lever to the gearbox. The linkage consists of a couple of ball joints that can get full of shite and make the gear change feel sticky. Take them apart, give em a clean and either grease or copperslip.

I appears to be when the bike is warm

Give the bike a hand wash and a bit of a lube taking extra care on the linkage (look through the frame to see it working) foot pedal, gear lever and cable, look for anything like small stones or lots of built up grime, check play in the cables, check the guard isn't rubbing on the lever and check that the cables are moving correctly. Also make sure when cleaning that there's not oil behind the engine case, just covering as many bases as I can.

Once all those have been checked if it still has the same problem, change the gear oil it costs almost nothing (£9) can be done in half an hour and is skill level 3 on my monkey has a wrench scale. Two plugs to open, a quick check to make sure there's not too many fillings in the oil (magentic screw bits are good to skim through the oil as they will pick up fillings) and approx 850ml of oil in the pan.

Good tip get an old 2ltr milk bottle rinse well, lay on it's side and cut off the side that's pointing at the ceiling, keep that piece drain the oil in to the bottle BUT use the bit you cut off to angle the oil away from your skid plate so it runs in to the bottle.

Then let us know how you get on.
