Hi all,

After finally moving into Mac world last year I had an old Windows laptop that had virtuall ground to a halt with all the Windows updates and processes running in the background (you can tell why I moved to a Mac...:augie).

Just installed Ubuntu on it, and it looks great. Has anyone had any issues with it? It's in it's honeymoon period with me at the moment and it was so easy to install that I've probably got rosy tinted specs on, but it seems to do everything I need it to - and it was free!

Grateful for any opinions......

I installed Ubuntu on my old desktop computer, it will now fly compared to Windoze. Try Linux Mint as well, I've got that on my laptop and somehow I prefer it to Ubuntu.

There's loads of free applications for Linux, shame there isn't one free or otherwise, for Garmin Mapsource.

There are disadvantages just as there is with anything - the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages IMO though.

I had a Linux Asus EeePC. Brilliant until I dropped the phone on the screen and wrecked it:tears:tears

Linux is a very powerful operating system but there are a few caveats.

Don't ever just power off the PC. Linux really does need to go through a complete shutdown. It does weird stuff with the file system. Files are kept open and need to be closed properly. A straight power off can kill the file system. That's what happened to mine. :blast

Keep an eye on your number of free I-Nodes  This is the count of the number of files that can be created in a file system. One system I had ran out, it then refused to boot so couldn't be fixed. How you do this, I don't know I just know that's what happened :nenau

Create a non-root account for your day to day usage. Root is very powerful and it is quite easy to do harm to the system if playing.

Good luck and if you can get used to all then strange commands (if you use command line level) like AWK GREP CAT MAN (man is used instead of help) then you'll love it.

Another vote for Linux here. I'm still using Ubuntu alongside Mint as I can't decide which one is best. My main pc is also still dual booting with Vista as I have a few bits of software that just won't run under Linux.

Thumbs up so far - thanks for the comments. I have to say it seems to operate a lot quicker than Windoze and it's reduced my blood pressure considerably.....:type

I run two headless file servers on Ububtu. I used to use mandrake on my desktop, but have switched to Macs, much slicker.

I installed Ubuntu on my little Asus netbook...

'cos I really don't like Windows :augie

So far it's been excellent, no problems at all :thumb2

Have been almost totally Linux for 3 or more years now but have dabbled for ages.

Annoyingly the only thing I need Windows for is to update my Android phone.

Netbook and desktop both have Linux Mint Debian Edition although I have a Windows 7 partition on the netbook plus a free partition on both to play with any distro I feel like.

Desktop is mainly for heavy weight photo editing including Raw and recently started video editing. Netbook does everything else I need it to.
