This is what Winston Churchil had to say about Marrakesh in the winter......
"Here, surrounded by its extensive palm-groves that have sprung out of the desert, the traveler may rest assured that he will never tire of the majestic view of the snow-covered Atlas mountains. The sun is dazzling and warm, but never unbearably so; the air is sharp and refreshing, yet never unpleasantly cold; the days are perfect, the nights are cool.
"The local inhabitants, dressed in their burnooses of various colours and patterns, are themselves a permanent picture; every countryman is a possible painting, every crowd is a pictorial composition.
"Should anyone be seeking a warm sunny Winter, it is to be found in a truly unique setting here in Morocco.
Key Attractions
The citys main square and focus of activity is known as Jemäa El Fna, and is a kaleidoscopic spectacle of street performers that include storytellers, acrobats, snake charmers and musicians. Surrounding the square are numerous rooftop restaurants that provide an excellent vantage point from which to take in the goings-on below.
Architectural enthusiasts should make their way to the splendid Koutobia Minaret, which was constructed in the 12th century and has been fabulously well-preserved. Towering almost seventy metres above the city, this mosque is the oldest of the three Almohad structures, and features colossal curving gates, detailed mosaic work and large copper balls, the purpose of which remains a mystery.
Out and About
Popular day excursions from Marrakesh include visiting the desert city of Quarzazate, which is renowned for its Taourirt Casbah and traditional Quazguita carpets, and is located 80kms from the city. From Imlil, also nearby, travellers can ride a mule to the Aremd hamlet to view Moroccos highest mountain peak, Toubkal. The coastal town of Safi is another enticing possibility, with a magnificent medina, old fort and beautiful beach
Leisure Options
Marrakesh is scattered with a plethora of venues for drinks and dining, and nightlife is particularly interesting around Jemäa El Fna. The exotic flavour of Marrakesh is also strongly present in the souks (markets) of the city, where visitors can peruse the atmospheric maze of alleyways and pick up wonderful local gifts and souvenirs.
Sounds good to me.
