Anyone fitted Keihan headers to R1200GSA

Hi Mike

I take it from your post that you have a pre 2010 model?
as of 2010 BMW decided it was a good idea to fit a valve in the exhaust behind the cat but in front of the end can. something to do with sound emission regs I think. this valve has been known to stick/malfunction, but
it can easily be removed with no ill effects an some say it lets the engine breath a bit better (no/less restrictions you see) but if you remove it from the system your headers wont reach the end can, hence the tube to fill in the gap.

What is this flappy valve thingy you mention? Where is it and what does it do?

Looks like Andy has said all there is to say :thumby:

What he says, fitted these as cheaper alternative to akro well made good fit sounds better pulls freely and look good, followed by remap at Hilltop all is right with the world. This TC is a keeper

Andy - I have the 2010 GSA.

Sarge - When spoke to Kevin he said the same regarding the end can, he said to keep the OEM can with the headers otherwise it is just too noisy. He will be calling me tonight and I will ask if he can do a link tube to replace the flappy valve thingy.

At the last count it looks as if we have about five who are up for a set of headers. After I speak to Kevin tonight and get the lowdown on a discount I will be asking for commitments and confirmation of year of manufacture.

Cheers all

Depending on the final cost id be interested in a set of headers for my 2009 GSA. I'm fairly close to Worcester so could collect.

Has anybody fitted Keihan headers to their R1200GSA?

What advantage does it give you apart from the loss of weight for losing the cat? Any performance enhancements?

Thanks :thumby:

I've recently been down this route so will give you my two pennyworth.

I have a 2009 ie single cam, GSA. Until last autumn this had std i.e with cat headers and BMW akro, road legal end can. I suspect this can offers no performance gain at all other than being somewhat lighter. The bike pulled well above 4krpm but below this was rough and fluffy with a big flatspot at 3k rpm. The flatspot almost tempted me to sell the bike. I'm no throttle jockey and prefer to surf the torque rather than keep the motor spinning, but that's just me.

Last autumn I fitted a pair of remus decat headers and used these over the winter with the akro can. The results were significant although I am sure no better than any other decat system. Engine feels much less strangled, revs more freely and was largely able to rev through the 3k flatspot more easily. It was still there however and overall it still felt less crisp to my mind than it should have done.

I had a remap done approx. 3 weeks ago and this in conjunction with the decat has absolutely transformed the bike. Much more responsive, sooooo much smoother and as crisp as a twin cylinder bike is likely to get in my opinion. The bike pulls cleanly from low revs, will pull a lower gear without complaint than it used to and altogether suits far better the B roads I prefer to ride on.

I'm not going to mention the hilltop performance figures because another bout of ' I don't believe it' will probably ensue. Let's just say that the midrange is now pretty impressive and it has shed loads of grunt at 5K rpm...

In answer to your other question therefore the performance gain with std can is well worth it. I rode my akro with the db killer out and it was slightly better but so loud it was unbearable.

Hope this helps

I'm interested in a group buy for headers + link pipe (or better still a 1 piece replacement to eliminate the valve

I posted about the Keihan headers in one of the decat threads and haven't had a chance to order them up yet. Looks like it may have done me a favour.

Count me in for headers for a 2007 GSA please. Going to leave the standard can on for the time being.

Cheers
Jon

Looks like we could be building up to a good group discount.
Price depending, I'm in for a set of headers (ideally with a single piece to eliminate the flappy valve) - 2012 GS (TB if it's relevant).

Quick update - Kevin didn't call me last night, I will leave it until this evening and if nothing heard I will call him.

Just fit a single cam system they all fit all models but SC system does away with flappy valve with no additional tube.

If you have a flappy valve compatible end can then a set of SC earlier headers are no good to you as the diameters of the tubes where the can meets the header I think you will find are different.

the earlier SC headers final end pipe are smaller to fit non flappy pre TC 2009 std end cans and could even possibly not line up true to connect properly with a TC Flappy end can........ I may be wrong but I don't think so

personally I would prefer to leave all this to experts like Keihen to sort out. instead of assuming others know what they are talking about (and that includes me) and buying something that doesn't fit

but Im fairly sure you cant mix and match a TC end can and SC headers
or TC headers with SC end cans

Update - I spoke to Kevin but he forgot to talk to his Sales Manager, even though he owns the company he wants to ensure he is kept up to date, Kevin will speak to him tomorrow and call me in the morning, it is certainly looking positive.

So far the list for headers looks like:

NicKD
Ding-Dong
APW
Greenman14
topcas2006
oldnfat
spm0912
Satman

I will need you all to confirm you're up for this and also how many need link pipes for the removal of the flappy valve.

Ta;)
