Anyone got the BMW alarm fitted.

My order goes in on Monday for my replacement bike and was thinking about ticking the alarm option.

So is it thatcham cat 1 for some insurance disc !

Can you purchase a hand set to turn off/on instead !

Ive noted it's turned on-off via the ign key and you have the option to turn it completely off from the computer pro, is this a pain to do reason i ask when leaving it on the ferry and train i don't want to be pissing around for 20 mins turning the alarm completely off.

Apparently it is not thatcham but is recognised big BMW insurance. It is very easy to switch off via the computer and only takes a few seconds. It was on my bike which was ordered as in stock. Otherwise I would not have bothered.

I have it on mine, and although I was initially annoyed at the lack of a fob, it only takes a couple of seconds to activate/ deactivate it through the menu.

However mine has given me at least one false alarm every night since I got the bike just over a week ago and without the fob I have to get out of bed, run downstairs, uncover the bike (I have no garage), insert the key and turn off the alarm. I don't have the ease of leaning out the window any more.

Is anyone having problems with false alarms?

I point out that it goes off an calm nights as well as windy.

Taking into account dub's false alarm and the hassle it creates, can't understand why they did not give a fob with the alarm.

Only have it because the bike was on it's way into the country and everything else lined up for me to buy it there and then. No problems for me.

Another vote for the BMW alarm here.

I've got one on my new GS, had one for over 3 year years on my K1300S and had one on my F800S before that. I never had a single issue with false alarms, even with the bike stood out on windy nights touring the Highlands. I don't think there's much in it for insurance and I was told BMW didn't pay for Thatcham certification, but I like the peace of mind. When I wash the bike and leave it drying on the drive, I like to know that no-one has decided to go and have a sit on it or fiddle with it. Equally, when away on tour and the bike is parked outside a hotel I know that the bike could still be stolen, but I would still hear the alarm briefly. I work on the basis that if I haven't heard the alarm, the bike is still there!

In terms of the fob, I never liked it. In fact I never carried it as I don't like loads of bits and pieces in my pockets. The only time I took it was on trips when I'd be on a ferry, and even then I had to look in the manual to see what button to press when. Each weekend when I washed the bike, I was guaranteed to set the alarm off as I cleaned, but never bothered to go looking for the fob. This weekend I did my first clean of the GS, and with "Disable DWA" being the first menu option, had the alarm disabled in 5 seconds. Result! The only problem is, I think I forgot to enable it again.

This alarm is a proper piece of work.

False alarms every night since ive got it and with the cover on the bike its a right twat to turn it off or disable it.

What a pile of shit. Paid £200 and I cant use it at all...

Well, took bike in today and waited nearly 2 hours for them to come out and say there is no adjustment to the alarm and there is nothing they can do about the constant false alarms.
They are speaking to BMW technical tomorrow to see if they can help.

Mine was similar. Oodles of false alarms but I ignored it.

Went to go to work on Monday and the battery was completely flat. Not even enough juice
to turn the engine over.

My local dealer traced the problem to the alarm which has now been replaced, along with the battery, under
warranty.

The entire unit was faulty. As well as false alarms they told me it drained too much current from the battery.

All replaced without hint of quibble.

I will let you know how it pans out.
