I travel twice a year normally June and September and stay in hotels. i'm just gettin a little jumpy should I fit a BMW alarm to my bike ?
I'ts a Gsa with the panniers and removable bags which stay in the room with the £1000 alluminium boxes outside. I chain and disc lock the bike but would a alarm make any difference...

Not really in the modern world it may help get your ins down in price but if the scum want it then that's the least of their worries

Get a good quality alarmed disc-lock.

It's a good visual deterrent, goes off if anyone sneezes on your bike - and if it fails............ it won't disable the bike

No. It won't help your insurance because it isn't Thatcham approved. It's not that great an alarm anyway. Spend the money on a good lock instead.

A half-decent tracker would be less money and just might have a chance of getting you to the bike before the scrotes have it away.

Alarms are a pain in the arse and no one pays any attention.

Get a decent lock and head for the bar.........

Alarm will activate if anybody tampers with the panniers. I always leave mine in the hotel room to be safe.

For me is a combination of what's already been said. I have an alarm + fook-off chain (yes, I lug that all around Italy with me) + I take the ali panniers indoors with me. I'm in Italy right now for 3 weeks and there's a mixture of parking opportunities. I don't copy the locals, I chain it to something and cover it if I'm going to be wandering off. It would ruin more than just the holiday if was taken, so I do all I can...at least the older I get I do!

I'd take those panniers in with you if its an urban place you're staying...

I for one don't think you're paranoid

Where do you store the chain when riding? Hopefully not over your shoulder!!
Just don't laugh when I tell you...

I pour it into a small sainsbury bag, you know the long life ones. Roll it up into a sausage and tie it with Rok straps between the top case and back seat. Weight is very central (it's heavy). Fills the gap, kind of, and because I'm solo it works and is very unobtrusive. It's the only part that's not lockable so I'm encouraged to use it when I park up. It adds about 1min 30sec to my stop/start routine, which I consider more than worth it (coming from London I'm officially paranoid, especially since my last GS disappeared in less than 3min) .

I live in hope!

Why would you take your alarm to your hotel room :nenau.

FFS! Simple - so that you get up in time for brecky! :blast

Addressing other people's concerns - the idea of only using hotels with secure parking - would severely piss me off. I think choosing your hotel location (and type) would be a better approach to theft concern.

The alarm on the LC GSA works from the key fob and mine works well and with the handle bar toggle switch as well. A good bit of kit but agree with others that it is only another complimentary security measure (also use disc lock, chains, park in safe locs (well lit and preferably watched over by a security cam). Its like house security......just make your bike less tempting (more of a pain in the ass to steal), than someone else's!

I agree. Security doesn't choose my stops. I just make a little effort when I do decide stop, wherever it might be.

Btw, you don't need a bmw alarm. There are other options for an alarm...
