As already said a tracker makes far more sense. Of course they can be found and chucked away but there are places on the bike tat will take a good wheel to reach giving tome for police or friends from low places to find the bike.
+1 (needs to be well hidden -assuming the scroats don't have a device to search for it).

Nabbler, after all the banter, what have you decided to do?

I've got a tracker on my Land Rover, I've set up a geofence (real word) at my house, if the LR leaves this geofence (real word) between certain times I get a text and a phone call.

Got awoken at 5:30am this morning by one such phone call informing me that my car was in the process of moving away from my driveway.

The last time I jumped out of bed as quickly was when I realised too late that a fart I was doing might not be a fart. The difference being today's result was a false alarm. Oh, and I blamed the carpet stain on the dog.

So would you recommend the tracker? was it a cheapo ebay one or a quality £00 jobby. Speaking of Jobbies, I don't let the dog in my room, so that wouldn't work

It's a SkyTag tracker. Cost me £99 with an easy DIY fit, then £9.99/month which includes having two geofences (real word) set up where you want. I have one at home and one at work. You set the times yourself, such as 11pm - 6am. If the vehicle mover OUT of the geofence (real word) between those times you get a text and a phone call alert. You also get an app to check the location of your car at any time. There are cheaper options but I couldn't care less.

This, combined with my internet home CCTV allows me to sit by the pool on a cruise ship and view my cars location details.

I've never quite 'got' trackers.
They might (possibly) help find the car / bike when it's already been stolen but they won't do anything to prevent it (unless it's plastered with 'tracker fitted!' stickers but then you're telling the thieves what to look for). By the time the tracker does its stuff, the major problem has already happened and you're on the back foot trying to find a stolen bike in the hands of people who are determined that you don't find it.

So you're on your cruise ship and you get a text message saying 'oh, by the way, your car / bike is being stolen'. What happens then?

That's easy to answer.

You at once put down your deck quoits and run to the vessel's internet connection. You post on the UKGSer that Eastern European low life scum have assaulted your stable and are in the process of stealing your awesome steed.

At once, a posse of likeminded souls will be formed, drawn from the four corners of the country (and beyond) to race through the twisties (don't do motorways, mate) to right the wrong. Those that cannot join as SWMBO won't let them or because their steed is undergoing wizardry at Hilltop will promise to keep 'em peeled and / or issue dire predictions over insurance wrangles, coupled to demands that the Channel tunnel is sealed forthwith.

Normality having returned, you can return to the deck quoits and that interesting life actuarial couple from Penge, you've been sharing tinctures with each evening at the Captain's table.

That's all well and good but I kind of hoped that every police officer in the country would drop what they were doing and scour the country with 'tracker scanners' in hand, working double shifts until your fine German steed was returned safe and well.

This is all a bit disappointing...

So many of my concerns covered in one post :beerjug:

I track its location and update the cops. I either get it back or I get an insurance payout. If it's a write off I'd probably buy it back and rebuild it.

So it's up to you to track it and update the police?

All this assuming that the tracker can actually update you with its location.

Good job crims haven't heard of faraday cages or GPS spoofers.

I phone Skytag and they track it and have update the police. Or I can track it myself online and ring the police. Or we both do it. Or neither of us do it. Or I just chase after it myself. If it moves from my house at night I get a phone call and a text alert within seconds, so at least Im in with a chance. I can create a new geofence location whenever I want.

Please don't think I'm trying to sell the idea of a tracker to you, cus I'm not, I really couldn't give a fuck.

Alarms can be ignored.
Steering locks can be easily defeated.
Pedal locks can be easily removed.
Trackers can be easily jammed.

Tell me something new :nenau

Storing the nicked bike in a shipping container will soon kill anything gps wise. The only tracker that police will get involved in are the proper data tracker £££. They use a vhf signal that is harder to stop and that is what the 4 aerials are for on the top of police cars. Even then your quite likely to get a not interested were too busy unless it's a high cost vehicle which a bike will never count as. They might get involved if your bugatti or lambo gets nicked though.

Please don't rely on the police using their in-car Tracker detectors. They aren't as effective as you would think and are usually overly or under sensitive, giving just a series of beeps when getting closer to the vehicle, quite hit and miss. Only a small percentage of police cars have them fitted and are generally ignored due to their annoyance. Which is why I discounted the genuine Tracker brand.

I didn't - I was just trying to work out what the supposed benefits are. I still don't 'get' them but others (like you) do, so everyone's happy.

Personally I wouldn't bother on a normal car, I'd just rely on the insurance claim instead. But my LR Defender is quite bespoke and unique, and is easy prey for anyone to steal. It would be impossible for me to buy a replacement. The body configuration is probably one of a kind, being a special build by Land Rover Special Vehicles. Its irreplaceable. If theres the slightest chance that a tracker might reunite me with my LR then I'm taking it.

I have a BMW alarm fitted to my bike. It doesn't reduce my insurance for the reasons quoted above but I'm still pleased I have it. If anyone fcuks with the bike when it's parked up in the garage or at work I'll know and will be able to,hopefully, take appropriate action. The only downside I've discovered so far is that when I took it to America last year the awkward fecker organising the trip insisted it must be turned off for shipping.:augie :D

Maybe the awkward fecker knows how shite these alarms really are.
still can't see why these alarms are shite. Arm it when you want with the fob, disarm it with the fob or ignition key. How hard is that? The debate about the effectiveness of these alarms as a theft deterrent equally applies to any alarm. The good thing about the factory fit alarm is that the can-bus system is not going to reject or otherwise cause issues with the alarm. So, not Deffo shit, or shite.
