Anyone had to get a new rear shock at 4K

new to the GSA and tring to set the suspension up, the bike wallows and bounces over any bumps in the road, ive taken it to the standard settings in the bmw book and its still awfull
gone up one position on front preload, seems to have sorted the front
i tried an extra 5 clicks on the rear preload and 1 turn harder on the rebound no real difference, i turned the rebound up to max and it now feels better solo but with the missus on the back it still wallows and theres no adjustment left.
is this normal for the GSA or is the shock just knackered !
its not even made it to 4 thousand miles yet and the warrenty expirys this month
anyone had the same problem?
any advice ?

Can I start by asking rider weight?

Having asked though Tossers come in some pretty large sizes and the bikes can handle them

Pre-load is just raising the height of the rear to cope with sag under loading and the stock shock does not have compression adjustment.

I'd take it into your dealers and get it checked, it does sound like it's not performing as it should.

i changed the shocks on my 1200GSA for wilburs units soon after purchase. much the same problems as yourself.


the stock units are just cheap crap.

Increasing the spring/ride height will do little to prevent wallowing perhaps the damper needs adjusting in a bit?

I find I need to adjust the damper every 5000 miles or so just to keep the wallowing at bay.

I took my 08 Adventure in for its service and the dealer said that they had to order and replace the rear shock according to computer when they inputed the chasis number.

Wot Cookie said, only I went with WP shocks......

A decent third party shock supplier should ask your weight, what kind of riding you do and how you like your 'ride' and then send you new shocks set up very well, if not perfectly, according to your preferences. I know WP Suspension, MC Technics, EveryAccessory, Maxton and Hagon do this 'cos they all asked when I was shopping around for quotes. Some of the websites also have really good guides on how to 'tweek' everything to get it 'just perfect', if such a setting exists

took the bike in to south london for them to have a test ride,Having the shock replaced under warranty and a couple of other bits while its there
they were really great to deal with, mechanic checked it out no umming or arring just replace the parts, cant ask for better than that.
