Confirmed First Aid Course 27th May 11am start

Would any of you be interersted in a First Aid course aimed at bikers, but to be held here in Wales? Full of good intentions, I did read a First Aid book one Christmas, but I scared myself witless and never looked at it since. :D

I picked up a leaflet about First Bike On The Scene (FBOS) in the NEC a couple of years ago (basically they show you what you should and shouldn't do in the event of a bike accident), but I did nothing about it as I seem to remember, the courses advertised were in England. In this weeks MCN though it said that one of the GS groups (didn't say where) had just done one at a cost of £45 per person and which lasted 8 hours. :eek

If FBOS don't do a course in Wales, do you think it would be an idea to approach the St Johns Ambulance, to see if they would be willing to give us a talk specifically about possible bike related injuries. I'm quite happy to organise it, if there is sufficient interest as I admit I wouldn't have the first idea what to do if someone in a rideout had a serious accident.

I've thought about doing one for a while, PW is up for it if the dates don't clash. So thats 2 so far. :D

I know a couple of paramedics to run a training company, in fact the have designed national courses for sports injuries and pre-hospital care. they are excellent trainers and may be prepared to put on a course for us if there were enough. Not sure how much they would charge but would be more in line with biking injuries than a standard red cross or st johns course.

if there is enough interest I will speak to them.

i am so looking for a first aid course to do as a cub leader i need to be be first aid aware my last certificate is way out of date and if i could do a FBOS course as well i would be well up for it, please and thank you

Yep....I'd be interested in this type of course as well....so put me down for it....thank you muchly.....Jaq.... :bounce1

5 so far then. :thumb I have no idea how many we need to make it practical - but my gut feeling suggests about 10 - 15 although suggestions from others who have done a First Aid course would be welcome.

Have a look at THIS THREAD. Honestly don't know what I would have done. I would definately have stopped, but as for helping the kid out. :nenau

Count me in as well, Campbell. Obviously depending on dates

With Maria and Jaq there the resus training should be rather interesting :D :D :D

FBOS

I was on the course that is featured in MCN this week and found it very well structured as a course specifically for motorcyclists. There was as the instructor said no messing about learning how to put on a triangular bandage or plasters etc. It was all aimed at making sure we had a basic but thorough knowledge of how to improve the chances of of an accident victim in the period between the accident happening and the emergency services arriving. This included where necessary the correct technique for removal of a helmet whilst maintaining the stability of the C-spine and how to roll a patient suspected of having spinal injuries onto their side in a controlled manner so they can be sick safely, also how to assess the scene and relay the information required to the emergency services to enable them to send the right people to the right place.
The course has been approved by the Royal College of Surgeons so has been well thought out and is very well taught. If I can understand it I'm damned sure You'll get a lot out of it.
There is a course in Wales, http://www.lancashireambulance.nhs.uk/Category.asp?cat=1143
just go to dates for courses near the bottom of the write up. Or if You can get enough numbers together They will come to you for a price (think they said £600 plus expences)
Just hope now I don't have to use any of it

With my luck Dennis - even if there were 20 stunning blondes in the group, I'd still end up with you. :banghead:

Thanks for the link Jez. :thumb

I have offered my services to Peter at Rydale as he asked me if I would give a talk someday. Brief C.V. I am a paramedic on the rapid response car in Cardiff (Welsh Ambulance Service) with 20 years experience so pretty much seen it all. I also instruct basic first aid including helmet removal on both the S.Wales police and Gwent police bikesafe courses. I understand that if Rydale put on a session that it will be free. If you are interested contact Peter Cramp at Rydale, Cardiff with numbers interested so he can organise a date.

Well done Medicbike - spoken to Rydales and he's going to ring you to sort out a convenient date. He's going to speak to me in a few days. Just thinking aloud - I assume most people would prefer Saturdays?
