Adam, Don't take it personally. We're only offering our opinions.
It'd be obvious if there was copper grease/anti-slip, so I guess that's wasn't the problem.
I only mentioned this, as my garage guy is one of the best I've known, but he still put copper slip on my bolts, as this is pretty standard for most bikes. BMs are the only ones I know that don't use it (though TBH this is the first single side swing arm bike I've owned. The others had an axle nut to tighten). Only noticed the grease when I changed the rear suspension.
Oh and it was 60 Nm I used to tighten my (cleaned) bolts.
