I would think the cracked webs are not adding to the strength of the hub. The cracked webs could be ground away and if the cracks have not penetrated further into the hub than the portion you can grind away then the hub should be OK.

Then again, I am not a metallurgist and it's not my life on the line.

The holes are countersunk for the head of the bolt. If you grind it away you lose the mating surface for the bolt. Won't stay done up too well then....

I assumed the hole was counter-bored rather than countersunk, I have modelled the hub in 3d using my professional engineering (even if it is in electronics) qualification to demonstrate my thinking. If it is countersunk then
my idea is rubbish and I agree that over-tightening would cause the cracking.

I have shown the part to grind away in red.

and here it is after the grinding.

I have to confess I haven't removed a bolt to have a look.

Aye, counter sunk unfortunately.

Its the taper on the bolt and the hub that provides a centralising function and also a retaining function - any significant damage with this interface has the possibility of compromising both functions, which is not good.

Replace the hub and bolts!

RUN AWAY

Just put a new wheel on and get on with it

It's not good, but the wheel isn't going to fall off due to the fact that 5 bolts are holding it in place and are pressed against the outer rim of the holes.

Carry on riding it around until you can pick up another wheel.

Yes minimise the riding though, Jono at ABW has a spoked pair with good anakees on for 650, the Tyres are worth maybe 150 so seems decent, if you want them let me k ow as I'm working in Manch until Saturday and have a van with me, I can get them to derby way no problem, good luck with it
